Since receiving this book just a few days ago, I have picked it up about 3 or more times a day to read and relax in. It is an amazing spiritual journey in each and every aspect of our daily lives. I love that it helps remind me that Christ is walking this journey with me every day. And sometimes it feels like an arduous journey but with Christ in our lives it makes it easier. Thank you Daniel Mortimer for this writing this book. I had the pleasure of knowing you years ago but never knew you had such a wonderful way with words!

This book of devotional meditations is an invitation to step into the heart of the Divine Mother. Her perpetual dance of cosmic bliss plays out through the eons as the creation and dissolution of worlds within worlds. Yet God, in the feminine form of the Mother – as the Absolute made immanent and personal – is ready to shower Her love and affection on any who care to turn their gaze toward Her fiery heart. Each poem is a meditation on the Mother of the universe. Feel Her boundless love and Her healing compassion as the Divine Mother hugs each reader in an embrace of timeless love. Dance with God in the form of the Mother! Revel in the call of the infinite! Open wide the floodgates of bliss as your heart merges in the roaring river of Divine Mother love. “Each poem in this inspired collection is a precious, radiant, tear-drop gem, forged in pure love for Amma. Ethan Walker is a rare find indeed, a heart-on-fire devotional poet who sheds tears for the Divine Mother each day. These poems contain the blessed essence of those tears, and to slowly savor them, like the prasad candies they are, would be a great aid for any spiritual seeker. OM Amriteshwaryai Namah!” ~ Ram Das Batchelder, author of Rising in Love and other books

As mortals in this human life we reach out to "see" God, The Supreme, The Divine, in some "form". Whether we perceive The Divine as Father or Mother, does it matter as long as we are sincerely reaching for and serving God with love? This is a book of insightful and beautiful poetry and pure devotions to God. And how wonderful, "Divine Mother Of The Universe", and we, Her children. This poetry goes deep beyond deep using words and comparisons that open the mind and heart. An excellent guide in the path of spirituality.

“Three points and a poem” was the old stereotypical formula preachers used to use for the structure of their sermons. Kathy Mansfield writes her poems while listening to sermons and reflecting on the meaning of the Bible.

Kathy’s love of poetry began at an early age, but she didn’t start writing her own poems until she was an adult. Inspiration for her Bible poetry came from summers spent with her grandma in Arkansas. “Grandma and I would talk about different Bible stories and about how important God was in our lives. I started to make poems out of some of our favorite Bible passages.”

Find within these pages poems about familiar favorites such as Esther and Ezekiel and about not so familiar biblical characters like Achan, Jael, and Melchizedek. Read about topics such as hope, priorities, and God’s will. The rhythm and meter of each selection will have you recalling pivotal truths and key concepts about passages long after you put the book down.

Read the poems along with your study of a passage in the Bible or as stand alone reminders of familiar stories and biblical truths. Enjoy this collection for yourself, with your family, or even with an audience. Who knows? Perhaps you’ll find inspiration of your own and find yourself writing down your own thoughts . . . and a poem.

Discover God's presence for yourself through Nidhi Kaur's transcendent collection of spiritual-based poetry, My Wedding with Truth.

Through poems such as "The Soul Shall Receive What It Desires," "Blessed Is This Human Form,” and “You Are The Universe" Kaur gives readers hope and guidance in transforming their lives into ones full of happiness and peace.

The average day is filled with stress, both major and mundane—this compilation teaches how to release that tension, forgive those who are causing pain, and live every single day in the present moment.

Kaur knows that for many people, the idea of "God" exists as something other, something that perhaps can only be found within the walls of a church, temple, or a mosque. But she reveals God is all around us—in the nature that surrounds you, as well as in every single human and other living creature.

My Wedding with Truth will help you learn how to see these things for what they really are and begin witnessing true miracles in your life. This kind of unconditional faith will ultimately help you let go of any worldly suffering and, instead, focus on the most powerful energy of all: love.

PALOMO Nidhi Kaur's, My Wedding with Truth is a spiritual and inspirational book with the main goal to guide readers toward love; love of yourself, our world and others around us. Kaur also states that this book is to help her two children Aryan and Nyra, by writing down all of the lessons she's learned throughout her life. This book is the first spiritual/inspirational book I've read, that was non fiction, but still I enjoyed it. My wedding With Truth, shows all, the things that can inspire people to do better in life. I recommend this book to all readers who do or do not believe in love or spiritualism.

Each section, not really chapters, have something to offer the reader. This thought-provoking book, has some interesting religious concepts of what it is to love, seek love and be loved; not just spiritually, but emotionally, as well. Nidhi Kaur has written this novel with poise and experience of a best-selling author. I highly recommend this book and will add it to my bookshelf, along with other bestsellers.

Read and Download Lei: A wreath for your soul, by Somali K Chakrabarti

‘Lei: A wreath for your soul’ is a collection of short/micro poems that are inspired by nature and reflect on different hues of life. The word ‘lei’ refers to a garland or a wreath in Hawaiian language. In Hawaii, visitors, on arrival, are greeted with a warm ‘aloha’ and adorned with beautiful, fresh ‘lei’ as a symbol of affection. Each poem, in the book is like a fragrant flower, meant to celebrate life, generate positivism, soothe, inspire, nourish and rejuvenate the soul. Emotional and enlightening for any age, the book is composed of four sections: Nature, Life, Inspiration and Illusion. Most of the short poems are written following the Japanese style of micro-poetry (a Haiku or a Tanka). The poems illustrated with soothing imagery, are layered and imaginative, very short and simple to read, and convey a deeper meaning or bring out a new tinge of emotion every time you read them.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Well planned simplicity By Bruce Newman I like to write poetry. A lot of people try to write it without understanding not only the heart required but the diligent labor for the precise words and their arrangement that allow the reader to participate in a grace of understanding. When I read some of my own creations I see where I’ve failed to strive hard enough to do just that. So I read the works of others to see how they handle this holy chore of writing. I ran across the poetry of Somali K. Chakrabarti on a poetry site I frequent. That in turn led me to her book Lei: A wreath for your soul. It doesn’t take long for me to know how far I want go into another’s work. If I don’t perceive quality quickly, I rarely persevere. But quality was apparent from the start.Somali does not launch right into poetry but prepares the reader for what is to come; what she is trying to accomplish. She begins with a brief description of how social media has shaped our communications because the type of poetry she uses in the book, Haiku and Tanka, are suited to the short bursts of words in the digital world. She includes a brief history on these poetic forms that clearly depicts her reason for using them. Thus enlightened the reader is ready for the divisions she has made by creating four categories (Nature, Life, Illusion, Inspiration) to accommodate the nuances of her poems. Each poem is given further expression by a picture and sometimes a quote or brief reference or explanation. This is not one of those books where one must wonder what was meant.Haiku and Tanka, as you learn before you start reading the poems, are meant to convey essence of meaning, so each poem is short and minimal. It reminded me of taste testing chocolates from a large assortment. I can’t say there was a flavor I didn’t like. But there were certain poems that penetrated more than others with me like Soaking in Colours, Rainbow and the Moon, Everest and Fractals in Nature. Those poems are in the Nature section, and Somali has a gift for laying open nature with simple clarity. But my favorite section was Illusion. I particularly liked Spell and Dormant Desires. The pictures and the words worked seamlessly to offer a small but delightful illusion. It would be easy to go on about this small gem of a book. Overall it had the feel of well-planned simplicity. I came to the end feeling a little lighter, that I’d learned something, and that I got more than I paid for.

Lei: A Must Read For Poetry Lovers By Maniparna Sengupta Majumder At the first glance to the book, Lei: A Wreath For Your Soul, which, according to the author, is “inspired by Nature, reflecting on life”, I was quite hopeful of it being a nice read for me. I'm a nature lover and I love to read, write and compose haiku. The book is a collection of poems written mostly in the forms of Japanese haiku (following the 5-7-5 syllable form) and tanka (following the 5-7-5-7-7 form).Somali has categorized her poems under Nature, Life, Illusion, and Inspiration. All four are inseparable, Nature nurtures and inspires life and the latter often makes us wandering in the whirlpool of illusion. The poems make you think, wonder and often you’ll be mesmerized by the way the author has painted the world with words. In poems where the syllables are numbered, one has to be nifty in choosing words, the end effect depending entirely on it. Somali has done it with ease, the readers almost lose themselves in the enjoyment of words.Lei: A Wreath For Your Soul is a breezy read. Like the softness of the fragrant spring breeze, it leaves you in peace and comfort, desiring for more. I especially want to cite this tanka from the collection, this one, I think, has been nicely buoyed by a deep sense of philosophy:Looking back in time, joining dots, I find, a fewmoments, which seemedonce mild, have surreptitiouslyshaped and bent the course of life. The book is an amazing read for all poetry lovers. I hope the author would come up with more of her collection in the future.

Beautiful and beautifully written By Amazon Customer Lei: A Wreath for the Soul is a lyrical tour de force that captures the imagination by subtle degrees. But just like anything organic, the beauty and meaning of the poetry unfolds gradually and shyly, like the perfect flowers the author sometimes writes about. I was captivated by the contrast between the foreward and preface with its intellectual curiosity and the poetry and art itself which was layered and nuanced. The result is a collection of short gems such as Rainbow in the Moon which I reread several times over just for the sheer brilliance of the concept. I won't give anything away but lines such as "borrowed from the sun the waves mirror, photoshop the sky" indicate how textured and evocative the poetry in this book is I wouldn't mind at all if the author looked into the possibility of doing greeting cards or calendars. A little grace and inspiration gleaned from nature go a long way in today's hectic lifestyle.!

Ebook PDF Online Visions Of Love - An Anthology Of Verse and Quote Volume 1, by Jane K Wilson and Steven Lloyd

Every day for the past year Jane K Wilson and Steven Lloyd, have written prose and poetry about love, and posted it online. Their debut volume of an anthology of verse and quotes is for every soul that has loved, for every lover who has experienced heartbreak to have that finally replaced with an amazing captivating soul mate connection. 'The aptly-named Visions of Love anthology is truly a book for lovers. The book consists of musings on love (born out of the real-life relationship of authors Jane K. Wilson and Steven Lloyd), romantic and sensual photographs, and quotes from well-known writers. If you are a romantic at heart, and want to luxuriate in meditations on the nature of love, then this is the book for you. It would also make a great gift from one lover to another. The large format was a nice change from most poetry books, and makes it easier to enjoy the content. Jane and Steve have done a great job in creating a collection which celebrates love, and gives the reader a window into very personal reflections on what it means to be in love. This is not a book for cynics or the jaded. It is an unabashed embrace of the romantic possibilities of deep connection'. - John Mark Green

Costa Visions of Love is undoubtedly a book for those who appreciate the written word... Through their writings, the authors, Jane and Steven, not only share their musings on love, passion and life, but they also offer the reader a peek into their personal relationship. And what better way to speak about love and being in love, than from self experience? The book is a perfect gift for the poetry lover, as well as for that special someone in your life. This is truly a remarkable work of art, and I cannot wait to see see where they go next.

Holbrook I'm blessed to have all of Verna Cole Mitchell's books and like all the others, I fell in love with this one! Every teacher should own a copy, especially every retired teacher. If I could, I'd purchase a copy for every teacher I knew during my teaching days as well as my current teacher friends. The book is nostalgic, sentimental, whimsical, and inspiring all at once. There are poems that made me laugh loudly, remembering the same circumstances that I faced when I taught years ago. Every teacher will remember (with hidden fondness) the mischievous boy who left a trail of paper airplanes in his wake. We all wiped salty tears from the young girl who saw her first boyfriend holding hands with another girl. Verna Mitchell's description of boring teachers' meetings was spot-on and worthy of a guffaw. It would be impossible to choose a favorite poem in this book but "It Was Time (to retire)" came close. I nodded affirmatively with each line, laughed aloud at some, felt nostalgia at others. I remember my first day after retiring, when school buses drove past my kitchen window and I sighed, then smiled broadly as I poured myself another cup of coffee and settled down to lazily read the morning paper.

I grabbed my #2 pencil and gave this book an A+ By BethL Remember growing up, there was that one teacher, the teacher that inspired you,  the teacher that felt more like family?  This book recalls "that one teacher"  and, in fact is written by "that one teacher." This book will transport you back to that classroom, but your vantage point will now be from the other side of the large desk in the front of the room. Grab that apple from the teacher's desk when you're on lunchroom duty. You'll need it as you try to keep a straight face when a boy with size twelve feet parades around the lunch room in a borrowed pair of size six shoes. Smell the French fries, then put on your stern face if one flies your way. This book divulges teacher secrets, like what a teacher does when she discovers that twins have switched places, and what would have made Robert Frost smile. As you read, smell the polished floors in the hallway and hear the locker doors clang. Adventure awaits. No classroom bell on earth will stop you from wanting to finish this in one setting. I grabbed my #2 pencil and gave this book an A+.

Not only is it obvious that she was a wonderful teacher but it is clear that her sense of humour was a great asset in that role. These poems are warm-hearted tales of her secondary teaching days, her students and their personalities and antics. I recommend it to any teacher, ex-teacher (like I am), student or ex-student - and that means everyone. You will recognise the characters - they are types you will have met, and Verna describes them well. It's a reminder too of the wonderful contribution teachers make to students' lives and Verna definitely must have done so.

An exploration of freedom by some of the world’s most celebrated poets, published for the seventieth anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi camps The year 2015 marks the seventieth anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps and the conclusion of the Second World War. But around the world, oppressed and imprisoned people are still longing for freedom and asking, “What does it mean to be free?” This collection of poems explores that question. In honor of this anniversary, some of the world’s top contemporary voices—including Rita Dove, Robert Pinsky, Jay Parini, Yusef Komunyakaa, Agi Mishol, Tsering Woeser, Han Dong, Ernesto Santana, and Richard Blanco—have written poems on the theme of liberation as it inspires them personally and creatively. Nearly all of their poems are published for the first time in this volume. The result is an artistic representation of the universal yearning for freedom from twenty-five countries—and countless stories of oppression, imprisonment, and liberation. Here are Afghan women writing in secret, Tibetan and Cuban dissidents, memories and hopes inspired by topics from Fergusson to the Middle East, from illness to spirituality to joy in nature. This collection demonstrates the power of art to heal and to bring attention to freedom as a universal human right.Lyrical, uplifting, contemplative, sometimes angry, sometimes hopeful, always masterful, these are enduring poems to enrich and inspire.

This rich and diverse anthology demonstrates (in gorgeous poems) that everyone, everywhere longs for freedom. Though the project was inspired by the 70th anniversary this year of the liberation of the Nazi camps, these poems are about many topics: illness, immigration, war, memory, racism, nature, children, music . . . . There are Cherokee, Palestinian, Cuban, Tibetan, Afghani, and Australian Aborigine voices, and their words inspire compassion for people everywhere. Copy on the book's website mentions that the poets are from 25 countries and their poems are translated from more than 20 languages and dialects, which is truly impressive. These poems will make you laugh, cry, smile, and think, and they'll teach you something new about people, politics, and life in distant places. Some of the poems are pretty hard-hitting (Rita Dove's poem about Trayvon Martin is one example, and Robert Pinsky's poem about Guantanamo is another). Others are lyrical and beautiful (Fanny Howe's meditation on clouds and Justin Quinn's walk through fields). If you don't read poetry as a habit, this is a wonderful place to start. And if you engage with poetry regularly, you'll be excited to have these new poems by so many very famous poets around the world. I'll be giving it as a gift to many friends and family this year.

A Magical Journey of Hope By Sunie Levin Liberation New Works on Freedom from internationally renowned PoetsA Magical Journey of HopeFrom Sunie LevinCome along with me on a magical journey of hope as you read this powerful anthology of many voices in their plea for freedom and liberation. Listen carefully as they need to be heard. Mark Ludwig has done a masterful job of challenging 60 poets in 27 countries to express what it means to be free. From the holocaust to the streets of recent senseless murders around the world hear their cry and feel their pain. What a fitting tribute to the memory of the poets and musicians of Terezin concentration camp. Richard Berengarten’s poem ‘Child Survivor’s Testimony’ chills the soul with the lines I’m alive because in the middle of the shooting my father said, Go. I walked away slowly. Nobody noticed. That’s why I’m alive. In our present world where there is so much violence and anger these poems help remind us that there is hope for freedom and liberation. Mary Kimani from Kenya writes ‘Free, Free, Free’ Pain can’t touch us no more, not like it once did, We are free, we are free, we are free. Read this collection and share it with your children.

Poetic Justice By Jill Bemis This collection of 148 poems, each one related to freedom or liberation, represents the work of 62 poets from 24 countries. The table of contents lists the poet’s nation of origin. There is a variety of traditional stanza formats, along with free verse and even one list. Each poem relates to a specific phase of the struggle against bondage.• “So they might know what liberation is”• “We are the drums of our ancestor’s hearts”• “No country untouched”• “A ghost of gunmetal drones overhead”• “Death sails into the gilder ballroom in purple satin”• “Speak when broken”• “Think of the trapped wren”• “Towards a promised freedom”If you enjoy light- hearted poetry, like Dr. Seuss or Robert Service, this book is not for you. This collection would have been rated a five, except it is missing biographical or bibliographical information.

More shadow than light By The One Who Reads Fanny Price, a timid and gentle nine year old, is uprooted from her impoverished home in Portsmouth to live with her wealthy relations in Northampton. Of them all, only righteous Cousin Edmund has any idea of her loneliness amidst the splendours of Mansfield Park and he sets out to befriend her. His kindness has the inevitable result and Fanny grows evermore attached to him as she grows into her subservient position in the household. As she reached young adulthood, Sir Thomas is called over to the West Indies to investigate problems on the plantation which is the source of the family's riches and at this point Dr and Mrs Grantley (the clergyman who has the local living) introduce Mrs Grantley's sister and brother to the neighbourhood. Mary and Henry Crawford are irreverent, socially sophisticated and captivatingly good company. Edmund falls in love with the unsuitable Mary and Henry causes havoc with the hearts of the Bertram sisters, Julia and Maria. Fanny watches with a stern and judgemental eye. This is a wonderful book - full of grotesques : the horrid, mean, bullying Aunt Norris, Lady Bertram who never has the energy to move off her sofa or Sir Thomas Bertram, full of rectitude but unable to see how his parenting is stunting the growth of his daughters. We see more of the dark side of early nineteenth century life than is usual in Jane Austen's novels - Sir Thomas's association with the slave trade, the shocking poverty of Fanny's family in Portsmouth (her description of the milk which is served there ("motes floating in blue liquid") seems to sum up the whole ill-managed and depressing household or the seaman who is brutally whipped on one of William Price's ships.Fanny may not be a heroine the reader can fall in love with but she is the heroine of a multi-layered book which can be read again and again.

I was surprised at its repetitiveness, its mostly stale humor and its hurried ending that wraps up everything too neatly. It's certainly not a bad book, but I found myself trudging through sections of it, feeling that I was reading the same things over and over again: a drawing room scene, a walk on the grounds; an unrequited lover bemoaning his or her fate. I'm guessing that it was popular fiction in its day, and like popular fiction in any era, it has limitations. The story line revolves around Fanny, a poor relation taken in by her ultra-wealthy aunt, Lady Bertram. Lady Bertram lives on the estate Mansfield Park with her husband, a member of Parliament who is a distant and utterly proper gentleman. The family has two daughters (beautiful and spoiled) and two sons (one a playboy, one planning to become a minister). Fanny arrives at age 10, and she spends the next 7 years being intimidated by all in the family except minister-to-be Edmund, who befriends her out of pity and then learns to respect and love her stable, thoughtful character.By the time Fanny reaches 18, she's become a beauty like her older step-sisters. She's still terribly shy and intimidated, but nonetheless attracts the attention of Henry, another playboy who is living with relatives at the nearby luxurious parsonage. Fanny does not return Henry's affections, as she has fallen in love with her cousin Edmund. There are twists and turns, as one of Fanny's stepsisters marries a stupid but very wealthy man with whom Henry has been flirting shamelessly both before and after her engagement. Also, Fanny becomes friendly with Henry's sister Mary, though fully aware that Mary can't be trusted. Edmund, meanwhile, falls in love with Mary, even while recognizing her faults, as he thinks he can cure them with his goodness. All this spins out in the very sleepy British countryside, where the same half-dozen people meet for dinner each night and then sit around playing cards and trying to be charming and polite. Jane Austen does a good job of conveying the mood in those parlours and drawing rooms, and there's some witty dialogue and repartee. But the scenes are repeated over and over, and you wonder how anyone could stand the dullness. Frankly, you recognize why Fanny's stepsisters, as well as Mary and Henry, long for more :society" and activity in London. It's hard to feel that Fanny is really the person to identify with.If the book is read as a sly satire about Fanny, who is smug in her own thoughts, then it does have added meaning. And I think that is part of the lesson, especially when Fanny goes back to her birth family for a three-week visit at age 18 and chafes at the noise, dirt and lousy food. But Fanny is too virtuous to be angry; she's just uncomfortable and embarrassed. In the end, things wrap up neatly. Sir Thomas of Mansfield Park shows that he has a heart after all. Those who flout society's conventions get their comeuppance. The prodigal son matures. The incredibly annoying Aunt Norris finally moves to another country instead of infesting Mansfield Park with her jealousy. And Fanny and Edmund live happily ever after.

By Ornery, Swaggering, Piece of work Mansfield Park, one of Austen's later novels, though not popular with all, perfectly satisfies me as another of Jane Austen's wonderfully written stories. Here is a summary of the plot, with a word of warning: I have left nothing out, it will spoil all surprises.Fanny Price, ten years old, timid and lonely, has been sent to live with her aunt and uncle, Sir Thomas and Lady Bertram, at their extensive estate, Mansfield Park. Her cousins ignore her, and Lady Bertram's sister, her aunt Norris, never fails to remind her that she is "The lowest and the last". Only Edmund, her older cousin, is kind and attentive.Eight years later, Sir Thomas and his eldest son go abroad on business, and when the son Tom returns early, he brings a friend, Mr. Yates along. Shortly after this, Maria Bertram becomes engaged to a Mr. Rushworth. Mr. Yates has a passion for acting, and persuades the Bertrams and the newly arrived Crawfords to put on and act in a play at Mansfield Park. Edmund and Fanny disapprove of the scheme, and also the play of their choice, Lovers Vows; however, the aspiring performers refuse to give it up, regardless of the impropriety of their actions. Shortly before the final rehearsal, Sir Thomas returns and puts an end to any future attempts at their play.Edmund is captivated by Mary Crawford, and any romantic feelings between him and Fanny seem now hopeless. Also, Fanny has a new, albeit unwelcome, admirer in Henry Crawford. When asked by him for her hand in marriage, she firmly refuses, but Crawford is not one to give up easily. When she goes to visit her family in Portsmouth, he follows, and tries to ingratiate himself with her, to no avail. Fanny is eager to be back home at Mansfield when her two month visit merges into three; however, the letter she receives, instead of inviting her back, informs her that Maria, now Mrs. Rushworth and living in London, had left her husband for Mr. Crawford, and the two had fled. Latter, Edmund writes that his sister Julia had eloped with Mr. Yates, and they had gone to Scotland.Soon after, Fanny returns to Mansfield Park, and Edmund, disappointed in the lax manner that Mary Crawford treats her brother's infamy, has broken ties with her forever. Mrs. Norris, not wanting to be separated from her still dear Maria, relocates from Mansfield, to everyone's mutual satisfaction. Edmund realizes how important Fanny has become to him, and they are soon united in marriage. Many have criticized this book as not being as good as Austen's other works, and though the heroine may not have the same traits of the others, that shouldn't make the story any less enjoyable. Some complain that Fanny is "priggish" or "too timid" or "not human enough". Personally, I do not see Fanny as priggish, only very upright in all her doings. True, she is timid, but she rises above that and by the end of the book, seems much more outspoken. I really don't see how Fanny could be deemed not human enough, she seems very human to me; perhaps it is because she refuses to lower her moral standards that she is termed such; to me, this only raised my opinion of her.Mansfield Park is now one of my favorite books by Jane Austen, why it has not enjoyed as much popularity as her other novels is beyond me. Hope you enjoy it!

Silly tongue-twister names like King Kubla Kahn and Maureen o’Meagin o’Shamus o’Sheegan By Coach A In Alphabet-Saurus, Hurwitz shares a collection of original fables intended for readers of all ages. Readers are introduced to an imaginative cast of twenty-six characters with names as outlandish as their stories. Silly tongue-twister names like King Kubla Kahn and Maureen o’Meagin o’Shamus o’Sheegan, reminiscent of Dr. Seuss and Shel Silverstein, catch readers’ attention from the beginning of the poem. The magical fantasy lands inhabited by trolls, gnomes, and pixies further draw young readers into each tale as well as hold the attention of any adult reader. The entertaining, character-driven tales are forward-moving keeping readers engaged and eager to know the fate of the title character. What’s the snap heard when Deadeye Dick – the short, stout older brother of Captain Hook – is caught in a tug-o’-war with a crocodile and fellow pirates? Should Harry Hobgloblin really worry about the Martian invasion reported in the morning newspaper?Because of rhythm, some tales are more enjoyable than others when read aloud. “Sidney Snake was on the make/And said, Just watch me have my cake/And eat it too! All doors swing ope/It’s such a joke” begins one tale. The book would benefit from more color and illustrations to accompany the fables. For instance, I would love to have seen an illustration of the fanciful frog appropriately named Fauntleroy that sports a bowler, cloak, and wig. Each poem is preceded by a page adorned with eccentric pencil drawings encircling the representative letter of the alphabet. An alternate design might use these pages to incorporate images from the poem offering readers a clue about what is to follow.Through humorous tales of varying lengths, Hurwitz accomplishes his goal of creating fun, thoughtful poems lacking unnecessary cruelty and gratuitous pain. As with most collections, readers will discover favorite characters and poems, and disregard others. On the whole, readers young and old will find this collection pleasing. This review first appeared in San Francisco Book Review

By Amazon Customer Alphabet-Saurus, by my friend, Dr. Arnon Hurwitz, has more to do with the Greek word 'thesauros' or 'treasure' than with anything paleontological. It is indeed a treasure of poetry (and music too, if you acquire the accompanying CD), each of the 26 poems included being creatively crafted around an orderly progression through each letter of the English alphabet and each letter serving as the dedicated starting point of its respective poem. Suffice it to say that there are elements of whimsy, irony, intrigue, surprise endings, and pedagogy in these captivating poems, as imaginative characters as well as storybook creatures and characters of literary renown form the primary cast. The CD version of the book has the added delight of music, mostly old Irish fiddle tunes performed by the author and ably accompanied by local guitar-playing pals. These tunes are evenly interspersed throughout the poem recitations, and thus they seem like oases that allow 'a drink of reflection' and invite the listener onward on the next leg of the journey. Recited by the author and his wife, illustrated by their daughter, and supported instrumentally by fellow residents of their 'current hometown' of Tehachapi, CA, this labor-of-love production of poems and tunes is truly a family affair and should provide you and your family the perfect excuse to (on occasion) revisit the alphabet.

Grins and more - stories to stretch the mind By Elizabeth Holtschneider I'm closer to 90 than 9 - at least most of the time....this book is a delight to read and the humor's sublime.Love the sly fables contained in the stories...makes me smile just to remember some of them. On all levels...from little kids to old dears....Hurwitz' writing encourages thinking and best of all reading aloud to anyone who will listen.

Most people outside Italy know Pier Paolo Pasolini for his films, many of which began as literary works—Arabian Nights, The Gospel According to Matthew, The Decameron, and The Canterbury Tales among them. What most people are not aware of is that he was primarily a poet, publishing nineteen books of poems during his lifetime, as well as a visual artist, novelist, playwright, and journalist. Half a dozen of these books have been excerpted and published in English over the years, but even if one were to read all of those, the wide range of poetic styles and subjects that occupied Pasolini during his lifetime would still elude the English-language reader.             For the first time, Anglophones will now be able to discover the many facets of this singular poet. Avoiding the tactics of the slim, idiosyncratic, and aesthetically or politically motivated volumes currently available in English, Stephen Sartarelli has chosen poems from every period of Pasolini’s poetic oeuvre. In doing so, he gives English-language readers a more complete picture of the poet, whose verse ranged from short lyrics to longer poems and extended sequences, and whose themes ran not only to the moral, spiritual, and social spheres but also to the aesthetic and sexual, for which he is most known in the United States today. This volume shows how central poetry was to Pasolini, no matter what else he was doing in his creative life, and how poetry informed all of his work from the visual arts to his political essays to his films. Pier Paolo Pasolini was “a poet of the cinema,” as James Ivory says in the book’s foreword, who “left a trove of words on paper that can live on as the fast-deteriorating images he created on celluloid cannot.”             This generous selection of poems will be welcomed by poetry lovers and film buffs alike and will be an event in American letters.

The Selected Poetry of Pier Paolo Pasolini: A Bilingual Edition, by Pier Paolo Pasolini

Review "This substantial bilingual edition of 76 poems, most drawn from seven major collections published in Italian between 1954 and 1971 and including some that appeared posthumously in 2003, is a welcome step toward redressing the damaging imbalance in the image of Pasolini conventionally offered to readers of English. Sartarelli's intelligent, stylish translations are accompanied by copious and helpful notes, a bibliography and filmography, and a spirited and very useful introduction. Wide-ranging, authoritative, and handsomely produced, Sartarelli's volume establishes itself immediately as by far the best selection of Pasolini's poetry available in English; its publication is a landmark in Pasolini studies. . . . Essential." (CHOICE)"An accused blasphemer deeply devoted to Franciscan Catholicism, a Gramscian communist permanently expelled from the party, an avowed homosexual dedicated to the consensual sexual freedom of everyone, a champion of the local on a global scale, a neorealist of the imagination, and a radically innovative poet alienated from the existing practices of the avant-garde: Pasolini is not so much a figure of contradictions as he is a force against the incoherence hiding in every hypocrisy." (Susan Stewart The Nation)“Pasolini is known as a filmmaker and political rebel, and for his tragic death, yet he was first and most importantly a poet. Sartarelli’s brilliant translations have at last made his searingly beautiful poetry available to English-language readers.” (John Ashbery)“Sartarelli’s impeccable and inspired translations will be of incommensurable value to all students of Pasolini’s oeuvre. This new English edition of Pasolini’s poems is the most comprehensive and the most accurate version available in the Anglo-American world. Although Pasolini saw himself primarily as a poet, outside Italy his vast poetic production has not received the critical attention it certainly deserves. Sartarelli’s generous selection and his sincere dedication will enhance our understanding of one of the major European artists of the twentieth century.” (Armando Maggi, University of Chicago)“The remarkable range of Pasolini’s poetic achievements, which in myriad ways underpin his renowned work in cinema and fiction, is brilliantly represented in Sartarelli’s impressive bilingual edition. His translations convincingly convey Pasolini’s densely woven, allusive poems, their musicality, passion, and lyricism. The touch of Sartarelli’s confident, sensitive hand, of a poet who is also a scholar, has brought a most welcome new edition of one of the most important literary and cultural figures of the twentieth century.” (Patrick Barron, University of Massachusetts Boston)

About the Author Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922–75) was an Italian film director, writer, and intellectual. Stephen Sartarelli has translated widely from French and Italian, most recently works by Andrea Camilleri and Gabriele D’Annunzio.

Great edition of a Great Poet's Work By Timothy B Sullivan A poet not well known in the US, but brilliant, and I greatly prefer the dual-language edition, as I have with other poets - it's the only way to capture some of the intended "sound" that is so integral to poetry.
