About the Author Author Brooklyn Elaine’s love affair with writing started in 7th grade in a creative writing class. She has been writing poetry ever since. She penned Beautifully Tragic as a way to introduce herself to the writing community. The book was written from the perspective of a character in an upcoming novel she wrote. Brooklyn is widely known as an online art promoter with her Facebook blog Art Allure, where she strives to bring art back into the conversation. When she’s not keeping an ear to the world of art she works as a freelance artist. Completely self-taught most of her art features bold colors and symbolic imagery connected to her own world experience. Brooklyn, having grown up in Northern Michigan, is inspired by her natural surroundings and all the beauty it holds. She continues to reside in Northern Michigan with her family, where she enjoys spending time on the water and being outdoors. Brooklyn reminds us all that inspiration can be found everywhere, you just need to slow down long enough to take notice.

The poetry was a story, each poem's leading you, hopefully to a renewal of love, but it was just not to be. It left a dark mark on my heart, longing for a new poem of love. The art work was just the right piece for each poem. Beautiful Tragic was what it was.

And the poetry itself has a depth and precise and imaginative flare that is striking. The poetry is soft-spoken, in other words, yet resonates deeply. It reminds me somewhat of the poetry of Louise Gluck. If you're a fan of modern poetry and are accustomed to reading it, then try this poet.

By Richard Ide of The Endless Mountains I have been a reader of George Held's poems for many of the later years of my life. I could go on and on about his gift for presenting the surprising, the odd, the scarcely touched, overlooked aspects of our lives and the world about us. But let me zero in on the most intense awareness that his work has so far engendered in me: this was my startled reaction to Mr. Held's "The Dancer In The Box," the fourth poem in this volume. I had just suffered the loss of an extremely close woman friend. A sister had taken in her aged cat in an unsuccessful effort at comforting it. I was lightly running my hand over the animal's barely breathing form when the cat began a last, high, keening wail of grief that echoed for a full minute throughout the room--the feline's dying trill, an embodiment of Mr. Held's words: "This one's for you...dancer, And dear neighbor. You Dance here forever!"

By Thomas of Santa Barbara The array of books of poetry Held has published over the years proves his breadth as a first rate poet--from satire to translation to incredibly gifted poems about nature that are actually exciting to read. Bleak Splendor is different and, in my opinion, is his best book. His subjects range from 9/11 to his father's suicide to Guernica to a retirement home and more. As the title suggests, the themes are serious; the point of view often dark. Held has taken the measure of our present day society and found it lacking, but there is no ranting, no showtime fireworks of flames without heat--everything is measured, controlled, and yet breathtaking. Definitely a book to buy, own, read and re-read.
