From-the-Heart Creative Expression & Powerful Personal-Political Critique By Julie Todd Timothy “TMZ” McGhee’s first volume of poetry really IS more than just ink. This collection of seventeen poems reflects the writer’s spirit, grit and experience. It is an honest portrayal of the author himself as a young, black creative in the United States. Subjects range from the intensely personal to the profoundly political; from drinking, money, fatherhood, womanhood and family, vulnerability and intimacy, to the American school system, black culture, art, hip-hop, economics and religion. It becomes obvious that the author is as literate in topics of social injustice as he is literate in his own soul.Upon searching for more of the artist’s work online (www.creativegeneus.com), one finds that he is more than a poet. He is a spoken word artist and creative performer across multiple media and performative styles. It is perhaps for this reason, his clear skills for spoken word performance, that sometimes his rhymes do not translate as well on the page. These rhymes may resonate more powerfully heard than read. Also, the format of the e-book may not necessarily help in translating the author’s natural rhythm and flow.I admire McGhee for how much of his raw thought and self he puts on the page for others to read and feel. His meditations on what it means to hold counter-cultural values in the midst of the so-called American dream hold lessons for us all. The writer exemplifies how to free our minds through artistic expression from the dangerous ideologies of gender, wealth and racism, which hold many of us captive. Our communities need to listen to and practice more of this kind of from-the-heart creative expression and confident personal-political exploration and critique.

Although she’d spent her teenage years collecting and recording quotes and ideas that moved her, it wasn’t until the death of her grandfather that Karen O’Leary found her poetic voice—and the confidence to introduce her gift to others. After delivering a eulogy for her beloved grandfather, O’Leary realized that people were moved both by her experiences and her expression of them—and that she must listen to the voice inside compelling her to share her work with the world.

In Soul, her debut collection, O’Leary treats readers to poems intended to pluck at their heartstrings and gently guide them to contemplate what lies at the core of their being.

Drawing from her own life—her relationships, triumphs, hardships, fears, and hopes—O’Leary captures the essence of a soulful existence in an accessible, resonant voice, welcoming people of all ages and experience into her poetry.

So make a cup of tea and curl up in your favorite chair with this collection of moving, thought-provoking poems, and prepare to be stirred to the depths of your soul.

This carefully crafted ebook: “An Enemy of the People: A play in five acts” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents.

An Enemy of the people is an 1882 play by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. Ibsen wrote it in response to the public outcry against his play Ghosts, which at that time was considered scandalous. Ghosts had challenged the hypocrisy of Victorian morality and was deemed indecent for its veiled references to syphilis.

Henrik Johan Ibsen (1828 – 1906) was a major 19th-century Norwegian playwright, theatre director, and poet. He is often referred to as "the father of realism" and is one of the founders of Modernism in theatre. His major works include Brand, Peer Gynt, An Enemy of the People, Emperor and Galilean, A Doll's House, Hedda Gabler, Ghosts, The Wild Duck, Rosmersholm, and The Master Builder.

Ibsen on the conflict between idealism and practicality By Lawrance Bernabo Henrik Ibsen is the father of modern drama and his 1882 drama "An Enemy of the People" ("En folkefiende") was one of his more controversial works. In the play Dr. Stockmann discovers that the new baths built in his town are infected with a deadly disease that requires they should be closed until they can be repaired. However, the mayor of the town (the Burgomaster), who is Stockmann's brother Peter, rejects the report and refuses to close the baths because it will bring about the financial ruin of the town. When Dr. Stockmann tries to make his case to the people of the town, the mayor counters by pointing out how expensive it would be to repair the baths and dismisses the doctor for having wild, fanciful ideas. At the public meeting Dr. Stockmann is declared "an enemy of the people" by the Burgomaster. To really appreciate this particular Ibsen play you have to look at it in the context of his previous dramas, because they all represent a conflict between the playwright and his critics. In 1879 Ibsen's play "A Doll's House" ("Et dukkehjem") was produced, wherein the character of Nora pretends to be a silly little wife in order to flatter her husband, who is revealed to be a hypocritical fraud. The idea that a woman would leave her husband and children was seen as being outrageous and basically obscene. Ibsen upset his audience and critics even more in his next play, "Ghosts" ("Gengangere"), an 1881 drama that again attacks conventional morality and hypocrisy. The topic is of congenital venereal disease but the true subject is moral contamination. Mrs. Alving has buried her husband, a degenerate who has left behind a son dying from syphilis and an illegitimate daughter who is probably going to end up being a prostitute. The play ends with Mrs. Alving having to decide if she should poison her son to put him out of his misery or let his agonies persist.Again, Ibsen was attacked for outraging conventional morality. The following year after "Ghosts" the playwright responded with "An Enemy of the People" and the character that is most identified with representing Ibsen on stage in Dr. Stockmann. The allegory is quite plain when the play is considered within the context of Ibsen's work during this period, although while Stockmann is portrayed as a victim there is a sense of destructiveness to his behavior. At the end of the play Stockman has decided to leave the town, but then changes his mind to stay and fight for those things he believes are right. As is the case with most of Ibsen's classic works, "An Enemy of the People" speaks to larger issues than those in conflict in the play. The debate is over the bad water pipes at the new baths, but the true conflict is over the clash of private and public morality. Dr. Stockmann is by far the most idealistic of Ibsen's characters, and that fact that he is opposed by his own brother, the Burgomaster, harkens back to Genesis and the fight between Cain and Able. As was the case with "Ghosts," there is an ambiguous ending where what happens next can be seen as going either way given your own inclinations as a member of the audience. Both of the Stockman brothers are flawed. Dr. Stockman's idealism is at odds with the practical realities of the world in which he lives while the Burgomaster ignores ethical concerns. Ultimately, Ibsen is not forcing us to choose between the two but rather to reject both in terms of some middle ground. The Burgomaster is certainly old school, believing those in authority get to make all the decisions and that the people must subordinate themselves to the society. But he was the one who made the mistake of putting the new water pipes in the wrong place, so even his claims that he is looking out for the welfare of the community are dishonest. Dr. Stockman argues for individual freedom and the right of free expression, but his attempt to fix the problem ignores any effort at persuasion or building public support. He also seems to take pleasure in be able to show that his brother made a mistake. Still, in the end we have to favor the doctor over the mayor because his integrity is clearly stronger, while still recognizing that his idealism is tragically flawed.

14 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Great Play but the Introduction is Lacking By A Customer This powerful play is my first experience reading Henrik Ibsen and WOW! The conflict is timeless and the leading character Dr. Stockmann reminded me of Sir Thomas More. After I read the play I did not want to put the book down and wanted more. I flipped to the front of my edition translated by Christpher Hampton and read his nihilistic introduction. Mr. Hampton missed the whole point and somehow thought Dr. Stockman really WAS the "enemy of the people". Hampton sounded like one of the townspeople from the mob in Act Four when he wrote:"This is to simplify Ibsen's intent; because however sympathetic Ibsen feels towards Dr Stockmann's cause, he is too subtle and profound a dramatist not to know that there are few figures more infuriating than the man who is always right. Stockmann's sincerity, naivety and courage co-exist with an innocent vanity, an inability to compromise and an indifference to the havoc caused in the lives of his family and friends, as well as his own, by his dogged pursuit of principle."Hampton's edition is a nice size with print that is easy to read. I loved the story and the characters and I highly recommend it to all. I have lived the experience and have been "the enemy" so I understood Dr. Stockmann but I learned from Christopher Hampton and my own experience not everyone will "get it."

Breathtaking, Dreamy, and Whimsical By Elizabeth Mathis Rating: 4.5/5 StarsQuick Reasons: the namesake of her inspiration, hope permeates every word, every line, every page; the writing is descriptive, flowing, and beautiful; there's a sense of journey, a rediscovering of the world—a story forged through years, heartaches, and keeping hope aliveI'm breaking out—into the world of poetry!Of course, that's not to say I wasn't already in that world. What I mean is, I'm breaking into poetry reviews, starting with this one.I received a copy of this collection from the author in exchange for an honest review. This in no way altered or changed how I read, thought about, and will be reviewing this book. Huge thanks to Mel Finefrock for requesting my feedback and offering up this opportunity!I want to start out with probably the most obvious thing ever: The cover is absolutely gorgeous. There's a whimsical, dream-like quality to the painting. I can imagine being in that park myself—the trees in full fall plummage above my head, the pavement slick with recent rain, colors dancing and swirling all around. Going into a book of poetry with such a vibrant, festive image in mind really helped set the tone and get my sense of wonder spinning. (For those interested, the artist is John Bramblitt—you can find out more about him via www.bramblitt.net )Mel Finefrock's poetry, on the other hand, helped to ground me in a way: emotive, evocative, and breath-taking, the words and worlds she creates wove a sense of dreamy, confident ease around my heart. Drawing inspiration from real-life situations, people, and experiences, Mel Finefrock takes readers on a journey spanning several years and covering some painful, heavy subjects—always with a sense of hope lingering at the very end, a sense of “It's okay; I haven't reached the very bottom yet.”The journey is quick in words...but so long in years coming for the author, who pairs both older pieces and new in a way that tells a story: of dreams fading, of wishes forgotten or broken, of hopes crushed and built back up. There's a quiet beauty to the space between her words, a place readers are invited into—to dream, to hope, and to fly with the poet.I really enjoyed stepping, just for a moment, into Mel Finefrock's life and viewing the world the way she strives to: with inspiration, with adulation, with wonder and awe. I highly recommend to lovers of poetry, to seekers of beauty, and to poets seeking a muse. If you're lost and not sure what you're looking for, perhaps you should start here; you might make a discovery of your own.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Wellspring of Well-crafted Words By Kelly Warren Warm, rapid micro-pulses of anticipatory adrenaline acutely called my inhaling heart and mind to complete attention, and then I smiled, exhaled, and settled in for the ride. That was upon reading the preface of this precious little book. What followed was an endearing journey through pages of vibrant colors, resonating sounds, and gripping imagery that repeatedly reiterated prolific scenes of exquisite detail, induced via a vast multi-sensory repertoire of language that kept my imagination on the edge of its seat. There's a curious mobility in Finefrock's phrases. It's as if she holds your hand and gracefully guides you along the path of what she sees. You'll want to linger at many points along the path and soak up the experience. Her words will not only abide, but will also encourage your consummation. That is an attribute of a brilliant poet, one who understands that meaningful poetry is derived from patience, and is meant to instill that same enduring patience in the hearts of its readers.Additionally, you will find your eyes affixed, no doubt in captivated awe , on the front cover which features the incomparable artwork of John Bramblitt. When I first discovered his art, it prompted a two word description: psychedelia tamed! Bramblitt's mastery of interspersing the intensity of colors always culminates in a dazzling menagerie of strikingly loud yet gently harmonious hues. The complementary and extraordinary nature of Finefrock's and Bramblitt's art combine to compel us to reinterpret the "dis" of disability as the dynamic, driving force of creative diversity!

As we grew older and she honed her art, I grew into an editor looking for something truly impressive to hold in my hands. Mel has crafted just that - an impressive articulation of life that I can hold in my hands.Patchwork Poetry is an intricate quilt of love, loss, insecure bravery and detail. Her vision of this world is beyond that of any normal person, she breaths life and light into the mundane. Enjoy her poems and see how simple tea roars into yesterday's lessons.Mel Finefrock's Patchwork Poetry reflects the beginning of her career as a beautiful and complex poetess. To quote her,"Yes ... this time it's baby stepsbut even thosecover ground."

The Palm Tree is rooted so deeply into the Earth's soil, that it can withstand multiple storms from Mother Nature, without uprooting. These magnificent trees may bend, sway, or lean far left or right, but will simply not break. Journey, a young man from the City of Baltimore, personified the strength of a Palm Tree as he faced many trials and tribulations throughout his life. Over time, it was Journey's persistent Love and Faith in God that enabled him to weather the storm.

Combining classic rhyme schemes with nuances of dark yet clever, nostalgic, and sometimes ironic poetry, Ryan Griffin masterfully weaves tales of childhood wonder, lost love, and the things that go bump in the night! Not since Edgar Allan Poe has an author captured the mystery and macabre that lies so deep within all of us. Poem themes include: murder, mayhem, suicide, solitude, zombies & more! Read a sample below.Autumn ShadowsCandles flicker in the growing coldStreets are barren, growing old.An eerie chime sounds from a bell,All alone, where the shadows swell. The brilliant moon sits in the sky,As luminescent clouds float by.Dark specters escape from their hell,All alone, where the shadows swell.Deafening silence engulfs the town,As falling leaves entrench the ground. The wind then howls a fond farewell,All alone, where the shadows swell.Along the path, creeping, crawling,Unseen, silent, and slowly falling. All alone, there I dwell,All alone, where the shadows swell.

Autumn Shadows: And Other Poems, by Ryan Griffin

Review "Many writers strive to approach the reader from a feeling of familiarity, a sameness from which others can relate. Those who write from darkness heed no such borders, instead venturing into the darkened woods, unlit hallways and abandoned structures others fear to explore. Autumn Shadows is such a journey, luring the reader along those foreboding paths between the comfortable safety of the sunshine and the ominous trail that beckons the reader who dares. Choose wisely." -Coffinnails Mike, Poet

About the Author Ryan lives in a small town in southern Pennsylvania. He enjoys reading, writing, astronomy, quantum physics, philosophy, cinema, graphic art, and web design. He wrote his first poem "Autumn Shadows" in 1999 and then started writing poetry again in 2006. This is his first published work.

Industrial Oz: Ecopoems, by Scott T. Starbuck

Review "We've started to see poetry and music and art emerge that challenge this deepest question.  It's crucial because we don't just need the side of the human brain that understands pie charts and bar graphs engaged in this fight -- we need the whole brain and the whole heart.  Industrial Oz is a rousing, needling, haunting case in point."  -- Bill McKibben,  author of The End of Nature"Industrial Oz may just be the most cogent and sustained collection of quality eco-activist poetry ever written in this culture, this country." Thomas Rain Crowe, Publisher of New Native Press "'Are you really awake?' asks a bumper sticker in an early poem. After reading these poems, you will be." Marybeth Holleman,  author of The Heart of the SoundAbout Starbuck's Ecopoetry:"Starbuck brings the personal and the political quickly together as in his short poem about the melting ice caps, entitled 'How It Is.' The poem begins: 'Sometimes you forget Greenland exists/ like two pages stuck together in a novel . . . . Then it melts and Holland disappears.'" - Bryan R. Monte, Amsterdam Quarterly"Kairos ,  sudden insight,  grabs reader and writer . . . . It gifts poet Scott Starbuck with lightning-quick vision." Sandra Alcosser, author of Except by Nature and A Fish to Feed All Hunger

About the Author Scott T. Starbuck was a Friends of William Stafford Scholar at the "Speak Truth to Power" Fellowship of Reconciliation Seabeck Conference in 2014, a 2013 Artsmith Fellow on Orcas Island, and writer-in-residence at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology. His poetry focuses on the clash between ancient sustaining forces like wild salmon rivers and modern industry and industrial livelihood. He currently lives in Portland, Oregon, and San Diego, where he teaches creative writing, world literature, and English. He hikes Oregon and Washington coasts documenting pristine aspects of wilderness as well as our culture’s desecration of ecological communities. 30% of the author's royalty will be donated to 350.org.

Starbuck's "Industrial Oz" is an exquisite volume of poems lit with piercing insights on humans and the earth. Beautifully crafted poems of joy and care By Philip Straffin These beautifully crafted poems talk about the insights, and the joy, we can find in the outdoors, in the play of light, in music, in a new puppy, in working with people trying to keep dignity in the institutional setting of an assisted living facility. The poet's voice can vary from deep and warm to light and funny, but there is always careful attention to language and rhythm, and always sympathy for the human condition. I read the poems slowly, with great pleasure, and gratitude.

Judith's poetry touches that waiting place again and again, whether marveling at a puppy, helping to enter an elder's experience or turning an eye on a particular light on a dark sky.

Lost in Time, by Roy Jenner

Review John in Spain (Avid reader)This novel introduces a new concept of travelling in time, backwards and forwards in a 300 year window through to the conflicts of a War in it's darkest moments, or to rural life in England at the beginnings of the 18th century, and up to the present day, that creates a necessity to carry on reading, it is also a perfect novel for the person who has a high level of concentration that permits them to almost live within the story. This is my way of saying this novel is a must.....!!?    Now awarded quarter finalist in Amazon Breakthrough Novel Awards. Editorial Reviews    Amazon.com Review "The writer has good story telling skills and I actually did not skip the car sections. Pace is easy, important backfill information is in the correct place, not crammed into the first page. Hospital information is minimized.( Americans would have beat that section to death with details)" -Vine Reviewer "Going from the pitch and the overall broad strokes offered by the excerpt, this is certainly an original idea and there's some imaginative approaches going on for sure. It's an intriguing opening scene, and it does a good job of introducing the characters - I'm not certain who the 'main' character is; the pitch is focusing on Robert, while the intro focuses on Philip. That's fine anyway - I don't need to know the "primary" character, and it's good to keep the reader guessing on what the ultimate direction will be. The dynamic between the two of them works well, and you do effectively generate some suspense with the 'deja vu' references." -Vine Reviewer

From the Author I grew up on this farm and after a lifetime the places and images are still clear in my mind.  In these pages I have endeavoured to paint scenes in the reader's mind of a slower life as it was then, but one filled with magic. 'Lost In Time' may tangle your thinking, but take the time to read, relax and escape from reality. A pinch of salt is needed on time travel; try it without the salt. Sue Hyde UKOn the Lips of a Lion was a great read and I look forward to hearing all about your new eBooks.SueJohn Riggott SpainI believe that On the Lip of a Lion is one of the most enthralling novels that I have read in recent times, however I like all the novels that this Author has written up to the moment, the first I read was The Bringing Down of the Hawk. Keep writing Roy, I love your stories.D.M.Lewis UKLike Valentine above I have also had the privilege of reading all of Roy's books. I loved Lip of the Lion and have passed around my signed copy in the UK. Roy is a great writer: he has been my inspiration proving that you're never too old to rock'n'roll! The 'Hawk' demonstrates Roy's skill and experience, a thoroughly engaging read. What is the e-book equivalent of a page turner?

Peace Disclaimer: I was given a copy of this novel by the publisher in return for an honest review.Lost in Time is the fascinating story of retired New Zealand detective Phillip Maynard’s search for Bob Gardener, a World War ll Spitfire pilot supposedly lost when his Spit ditched in the sea. Only Bob’s son Robert and his mother Andrea don’t believe Bob died that day. They believe he’s only lost somewhere, waiting for someone to find him. When young Robert fortuitously saves the life of Phillip Maynard, he finds the man who can help him locate his dad and bring him home. This novel is full of twists and turns. It recounts the adventures of several characters through various timelines – the 18th Century, the 20th, and the 21st. The reader is transported along with our time voyagers to Trillinghurst Farm in its various incarnations through time as Maynard searches for his quarry. The Spitfire becomes a focal point, but will Bob Gardener wish to return to his wife and young son in 1941?I really enjoyed the story and have read other works by this author, who has a knack of creating vivid images of times gone by. I wanted to give this book the 5 stars the story deserves but I’m afraid the editing lets it down a little. There were typos and errors which the copy editor should have caught, and in my opinion, the writing itself could have done with tightening. But please don’t let that put you off buying the book. It’s a great read and deserves a wide audience. Recommended for anyone who likes adventure, mystery, gentle romance and time travel.

I thoroughly enjoyed this engrossing read that took me on a wonderful journey both through time and across the globe. Excellent.

Is it historical, supernatural, a love story or a study of humanity? Philip Maynard is the main character and we see him at first relocated from New Zealand to England after the death of his wife. He is a retired police inspector and he has returned to the town in England where he grew up in order to try to rediscover his roots. He meets a strange young man in a very classic car as he crashes into a hedgerow near his rented home. This starts him on a journey that covers 200 years. Philip finds that he isn't the only one who is journeying through time while on his very strange and liberating travels. He meets a young RAF air force pilot from the second world war, an English lord in the 18th century and two remarkable women to name a few. I found the book a bit difficult to follow as it jumped from time frame to time frame and from character to character, but in the end, when I finished, I felt strangely satisfied. I think Mr. Jenner accomplished what he set out to do with this book - at least with me anyway. I would recommend this book to those who like flights of fancy in their reading life. The strong characters help to elevate the book from the supernatural to the real and human.

Stiffler Enjoyed Thom Brucie's chapbook that celebrates his apprenticeship under master carpenter and craftsman Virgil McLynn. Brucie clearly has learned lessons from his mentor beyond how to fashion wood and plaster and metals with his carpenter's tools. He has learned to look at the world with a honed vision and make poetry of what he sees.

Poetry That Touches the Soul of a Woman By Betty Zeitz Joan Hough Harrington's marvelous book, Twists and Turns in the Hearts, Minds, and Lives of Women, is made up of her expressive poetry and an addendum of prose, that speak directly to all women on that basic, primitive level that is the quintessential female. When the reader begins her journey through the book, she finds herself saying, "Yesssssss!! I've done just such a thing, or felt just such an emotion!" Or if not, we can still identify and sympathize with the poetic subject. Her poems connect with women on a visceral level. She has known great love and great loss (many times), and expressing her unbearable grief through poetry was undoubtedly therapy for her that serendipitously allows us to channel our own personal grief through those same poems. Joan's poems span the years from childhood to her current 80-something years, with perspective from all vantages in between, and the entire gamut of emotions. This is a thoroughly delightful book which I highly recommend.I think Joan's tardiness in publishing her work stemmed from a belief (wrong) that her poems weren't really poetry because they didn't fit the strict definition of rhyme and meter. She is not that kind of poet; her verse is unbound and unfettered but is undeniably poetic, both in language and emotional impact.Although her book will be treasured by the women who own it, I can also recommend it for men who want to understand women.

I enjoyed the smells of the smoke house, and the taste of the chicken eggs, (as it all disintegrates before my eyes). I missed the loved ones gone, but hopefully not forever, and I, like you, felt the presence of the man in the moon. You, my Emily Barrett Browning, have given me new poetry to love and cherish. My heart lives, and loves and cries and smiles again. As we read great poetry we put our own experiences into it and it has meaning to each heart that interprets it… as only an individual heart can… and I pray that all the hearts who read it have at least one parrot to bathe in the end… and if no parrot exists for them, then may the WORDS of this great song be the parrot that fills their hearts with love, friendship and happiness forever… because there is nothing better than a great book of poetry. She is funny, so deeply aware and a real woman who knows a real man - and all our foibles. I read this book to feel good and at peace with my past and my future. I think you should too.Twists and Turns in the Hearts, Minds, and Lives of Women: Adventures in Poetry and Prose
