Blankenship I cannot think of a better way to introduce the poetry of Samuel Taylor Coleridge than this small volume. The selection is excellent and of interest you the young reader. The commentary is quite relevant as are the pictures which accompany it. I find that often now, our young people go all the way through the early grades in school and many of them have never heard of Coleridge, much less read his poetry. This was the sort of stuff my generation and the generation before it grew up on and cut our teeth on. I truely feel I would be much less richer had I not read it and had it read to me. I do not feel I am any worse for the wear. I am fearful that we are bringing up an entire generation (rightfully or wrong, although I feel it is the later) of young folks who will have no appreciation to this great art form and will miss a lot. This book helps. This entire series helps, as a matter of fact and I certainly recommend you add this one and the others to your library. Actually, it is rather fun reading these with the young folk and then talking about them. Not only do you get to enjoy the work your self and perhaps bring back some great memories, but you have the opportunity to interact with your child or student. It is actually rather surprising what some of the kids come up with. I read these to my grandchildren and to the kids in my classes at school. For the most part, when I really get to discussing the work with them, they enjoy it. Recommend this one highly.

Moore Though now the least known and read of the great English Romantic poets, Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote some of the language's most immortal poems, including "Kubla Khan" and "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner." William Wordsworth's contemporary, he exercised a profound influence on the better-known writer and the younger Romantics, the latter being especially impacted by his fascinations with the occult and supernatural as well as his innovations with form. Coleridge indeed originated or perfected many genres that soon became English poetry standards, such as the conversation poem (e.g., "This Lime Tree Bower my Prison"), while works like "Christabel" were simply revolutionary on technical grounds. Also, with Wordsworth, he helped bring ballads back into vogue. More important than all this is that his best poems still stand up as remarkable instances of a singular vision - dramatically engaging, technically competent, intellectually respectable, and thematically intriguing. Though not in English poetry's upper echelon, Coleridge remains an important writer with whom anyone seriously interested in poetry must be familiar. This great collection has a generous selection - thirty-five poems over 133 pages. It is not merely representative but essentially comprehensive, containing nearly all of Coleridge's notable poems. This moves it beyond a mere primer; everyone but hard-cores and scholars will be fully served except those wanting substantial supplemental material. As this is an inexpensive edition, we get only a table of contents and a chronology; anyone wanting biographical or critical material, notes, or line numbers must look elsewhere. There are many such editions, but this will certainly satisfy most. The packaging is actually quite nice, especially considering the price; the book is a hardback with strong binding and even a built-in bookmark. Some may dislike its smallness, though the print is relatively large, but at least as many will be glad it can be pocketed. All told, anyone wanting anything less than a critical and/or comprehensive edition could do no better.

By A Customer This review relates to the volume -The Works of SamuelTaylor Coleridge-, published by The Wordsworth PoetryLibrary, Wordsworth Editions Ltd., 1994. 614 pp.There is an "Introduction" by Martin Corner (KingstonUniversity) and an excellent "Preface" by ErnestHartley Coleridge, which not only tells the completeselection of poems and how they were arrived at(reprinted here by Wordsworth Editions) but alsoincludes the publishing history of the variouseditions, and how the separately published itemswere brought together. This reprinted edition mustbe of an edition after 1893, as that is the lastedition mentioned by E.H. Coleridge in his Preface. This reprint is a wonder for general readers, students, and scholars (particulary the latter, for the notes, publishing histories, and first-time inclusions ofitems not found elsewhere before this edition areinvaluable). The notes below major poems, little known items, and previously not published pieces are extremelyvaluable and interesting. The collection of poemsthemselves are listed in chronological order undereach year starting with 1787 ("Easter Holidays" [MS.Letter, May 13, 1787.], "Dura Navis" [B.M. Add. MSS.34,225], "Nil Pejus est Caelib Vita" [Boyer's -LiberAureus.], for instance. For this edition, E.H. Coleridge in the "Preface"states: "I desire to express my thanks to my kinsmanLord Coleridge for opportunity kindly afforded me ofcollating the text of the fragments first published in1893 with the original MSS. in his possession, and ofmaking further extracts; to Mr. Gordon Wordsworth forpermitting me to print a first draft of the poem addressedto his ancestor on the 'Growth of an Individual Mind'; andto Miss Arnold of Fox How for a copy of the first draft oflines 'On Revisiting the Sea-shore.'This is a COMPLETE edition or collection of all ofColeridge's work. Although many people will be interestedin Coleridge as the author of "The Rime of the AncientMariner," "Christabel," and "Kubla Khan," there are themany lesser known (but no less interesting and insightful)poems here -- as well as the the obvious influences ofClassical reading and learning on Coleridge. There are the 9 "Sonnets on Eminent Charcters" (includingMr. Erskine, Burke, Priestley, La Fayette, Koskiusko,Pitt, Rev. W.L. Bowles, Mrs. Siddons, William Godwin,Robert Southey of Baliol College, Oxford, RichardBrinsley Sheridan, Esq., and Lord Stanhope; two versionsof "Monody on the Death of Chatterton"; "A MathematicalProblem" (in verse!); "Pantisocracy;" "On the Prospectof establishing a Pantisocracy in America;" "To theNightingale;" "The Eolian Harp;" and, under 1797,"The Raven" (which predates Edgar Allan Poe's ownfamous poem addressed to that subject). The real treasures, however, are the host of lesserknown but provocative philosophical speculations, allegorical compositions, and moody meditations.Among these would be poems like "Psyche;" "A TomblessEpitaph," "The Visionary Hope;" "Time, Real andImaginary: An Allegory;" "To Nature" (1820?); "Limbo;""Ne Plus Ultra;" "Sancti Dominici Pallium: A DialogueBetween Poet and Friend;" "Constancy to an IdealObject;" "Epitaphium Testamentarium" and others. There are sections devoted to "Fragments," "MetricalExperiments," and the Appendices: (I) First Drafts,Early Versions, Etc.; which includes versions of"The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" and "The Raven";and, most interesting, (II) "Allegoric Vision;"and (III) "Apologetic Preface to 'Fire, Famine, and Slaughter.'" This is a fabulous collection of Coleridge andcould only be further recommended by a few of HISlines: In many ways does the full heart reveal The presence of the love it would conceal; But in far more th' estranged heart lets know The absence of the love, which yet it fain would show.(1826). -- Robert Kilgore.

Most up to dat state of the art of western haibun writing By Amazon Customer Journeys 2015 undoubtedly presents the most op to date state of the art of western haibun writing. As I know from own experience Angelee Deodhar, herself well known and respected as a fine haiku poet and author of haibun, contacted the authors whose work, she felt, should be included. She then meticulously selected from their previously published work the five haibun she ranked as their best. This of course also means that all haibun in Journeys 2015 have at least twice been approved by qualified editors and/or publishers. The result is a collection showing the wide variety of styles and subject matter that can be convincingly dealt with in this old, but for western writers and reader rather new literary format.

This is a wonderful collection of modern haibun in English By Michael Rehling This is a wonderful collection of modern haibun in English, but it also contains thoughtful commentaries on the evolution of the form itself. That alone would make this a standout collection for anyone interested in Japanese poetic forms, and their English adaptations. This anthology reviews the historical evolution of haibun, and provides the reader with outstanding examples of the form. Want to learn more? This book would be a wonderful starting point for anyone interested in haibun. A wonderfully enjoyable read.

The different voices heard here ensure that it is never overwhelming to read so many Haibun. It also charts the development of the literary form by separating the contributors as early/contemporary, which is an added bonus. The introductions and brief biographies are both useful and insightful. All in all, a great reference for those new to/proficient in writing/studying/reading Haibun.

The 78 poems within the collection, The Cotton Mill Blues, begin with the author's recall of his experiences at work in a Southern textile factory while still in his teens, and proceed to touch upon, in vivid detail, many of the people and influences from his life in a mid-twentieth century cotton mill village. Ronald Maney's poetry recounts the personal stories and subsequent development of a unique world-view, particularly involving his parents, siblings, and relationships as he began his long career as a public and private school teacher. Many of Maney's poems focus on his attitudes on love, family disfunction, the loss of connections, poverty in a world of burgeoning wealth, and youthful confusion in the troubling era of the 1960's into mature themes of later decades.

I bought this little volume through the Haiku Society of America's (HSA) website, which is why this review is not marked "Verified Purchase." With 298 haiku written by (almost as many) poets from 14 different countries, this is truly an international (not just American) book of contemporary, English-language haiku. Full disclosure: I am a member of HSA and had one of my haiku included in this anthology. The overall theme was "water," so the poems are presented by watery sub-themes in the book: Freshwater, Ocean, Weather, and Humanity. I was by turns moved, delighted, impressed, surprised, tickled, and saddened by the tiny gems in this anthology. I am so glad to have joined this organization and become part of its community. You will be pleased with this quality book, for yourself or for offering to your friends. I would truly feel this way even if I were not a member. All "styles" of haiku are represented: the traditional 5-7-5 ones, and the modern, free-style ones.

Lee, Editor, writes about water and says: "For me, reading the nearly three hundred submissions to this year's anthology was a never-ending experience and delight at how this important element affects us all, sustaining and refreshing not only the body but also the soul" (page 5).This is a beautiful book to read and reread. It was designed and produced by the Editor in collaboration with Mike Montreuil. The cover and photographs in the book are by Catherine J.S. Lee. The society has an official website for those who may wish more information. I am a current member from the Midwest USA and have a poem in the book.

Remember this, the poet tells himself as he races his little girl: what is a memory that anticipates itself / a recollection / that becomes / the ground on which the present plays. And we follow, drawn along a golden thread between father and daughter that is at once binding and unwinding, the reweave of every Charlotte's Web. Here are poems, in the language of the luminous moment, full of the timeless, of time s surprise, of all that enraptures, all that sorrows, all that joys. - ROBERT MURPHY, Author of FROM BEHIND THE BLIND

Charlotte Songs, by Paul Pines

Review Many of us admire Paul Pines work as poet, novelist, and memoirist. In Charlotte Songs, these three gifts come together. Here he is the singer of Charlotte, who is asked in the penultimate poem to check one of the following with regard to publication of the book: I need to think about it; No!;I don t want to deal with this now (or ever); and Go For It Daddy! I say, Go For It! --John MatthiasThe great themes like Love, Death and Family have inspired masterpieces and, alas, Hallmark Cards. In Charlotte Songs, Paul Pines celebrates his daughter. But, if you want the Hallmark Card version of fatherhood, you ve come to the wrong place. Pines gives us the full paradox of living with his child as she grows from toddler to young woman. Inventive, humorous, baffling and poignant. --Dalt Wonk

About the Author PAUL PINES grew up in Brooklyn around the corner from Ebbets Field and passed the early 60s on the Lower East Side of New York. He shipped out as a Merchant Seaman, spending part of 65/66 in Vietnam, after which he drove a cab until opening his Bowery jazz club The Tin Palace, the setting for his novel, The Tin Angel. Redemption, a second novel, is set against the genocide of Guatemalan Mayans. My Brother's Madness, a memoir, explores the unfolding of intertwined lives. He has published thirteen books of poetry: Onion, Hotel Madden Poems, Pines Songs, Breath, Adrift on Blinding Light, Taxidancing, Last Call at the Tin Palace, Reflections in a Smoking Mirror, Divine Madness, New Orleans Variations & Paris Ouroboros, Fishing On The Pole Star, Message From The Memoirist and Charlotte Songs. Poems set by composer Daniel Asia appear on the Summit label, and opposite Israeli poet Yehuda Amichai, in his 5th Symphony recorded by the Pilsen Symphony. Pines is the editor of the Juan Gelman s selected poems, Dark Times/ Filled with Light. He lives with his wife, Carol, in Glens Falls, NY, where he practices as a psychotherapist and hosts the Lake George Jazz Weekend.

Black & White Edition: Watercolor Illustrations presented in Greyscale

Drawing inspiration from her past as well as the ordeals of others, Melanie Thomason speaks for the child she once was and for those who have yet to find their voice.

The poet knows that abuse in all of its forms leave scars, some are just not visible on the surface. While MOONPIES & NAUGAHYDE delves into emotional, verbal, physical and sexual abuse, it is not about being a victim but rather about surviving the abuse and refusing to be defined by it.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. so they can better understand what children go through when they are young By kitty kat Moonpies & Naugahyde is about childhood sexual abuse. The poems are direct, honest and without self-pity. Ms. Thomason's words are powerful, brave and sometimes heartbreaking, but there is an underlying strength that runs through her work. This book would be extremely helpful to anyone who has experienced sexual abuse as a child. It is a book written from personal experience, a book that should be read by everyone, so they can better understand what children go through when they are young, powerless, helpless and unable to escape.

By Roxan Chen The long awaited second book by Melanie Thomason, Moonpies and Naugahyde was worth the impatient wait.A page turner, raw, blunt, heartfelt, evocative, it takes one through a very rough ride of a childhood admirably survived in spite of the unspeakable. Touching, shocking and extremely well-written, Moonpies and Naugahyde is an enjoyable must-read and makes for a fine coffee-table book (with its appealing art!) and is a very fine gift.Roxan Chen Union, NJ, USA

Think of this book as Dr. Seuss does with reality. It takes things going on in the world and while rhyming can tell you a story. Some will make you laugh and some make you cry, but hopefully it'll make you wonder. Then maybe a poem will touch you and make you want to make yourself a better person. Just like music, some songs move you and some you skip. These poems I hope will do the same thing. With religion, humor, and world incidents all coming together, they make a book of poems to remember. The last poem titled THE END was one of the very hardest ones to do because I don't know what really happens after you die I just knew it was something I had to try. Once you read it it'll make you think, I pray, which direction in life you want to take.
