From the Foreword: "So, like… what is this? I guess you could ask that but that’s sort of just a question I’m asking myself. Even though a lot of the pieces in here stretch back to 2013, I started “work” on this around June of this year (2015) with the intention of just getting something out there. I had a lot of poetry and prose building up and I wanted to finally put it to good use; at first it seemed aimless and more like a boasting ground (“I WROTE A BOOK!”) than an actual honest-to-God real-as-hell work of art. Like, something with integrity. The more I wrote though, spending my summer mostly by myself in front of a computer screen, the more I was able to see the path that this thing was carving for itself. Not like the book had developed a mind of its own, but more along the lines of me throwing shit at the walls and seeing the eventual shape of what stuck, some nebulous, but overall purposeful shape. I like to be really black and white with things, so if I had to put a succinct thesis statement on what this book is about, I would put my nose up in the air and tell you “this is a book that explores how anxiety and depression affect your relationship to reality”, and, while I guess that’s technically true, because that’s what most of the pieces here deal with, this has really been more like an overwrought diary for me that I wrote in when I really needed to, then went back later to rearrange and make it look pretty. Am I important enough to market my diary to people? I mean, probably not. But, in a nutshell, that’s what this whole aggregate is about- anxiety, depression, all those buzzwords, and how, when thrown into a centrifuge with a subject (me!), it can get all messy and create really weird and cool shit. So this is my cool shit. Maybe “cool shit” is taking it a bit too lightly, because I go to what I consider to be some far depths of my mind trying to map out what goes on in there and put it on the page. There’s a lot of stuff in here that came right out of the absolute worst and most miserable parts of my life. That’s a lot of what art is, though, a purging of the intangibles laying on the seabed of our psyche and making it physical, or at least substantial. So, to hype myself up a little, I hope this surges you with catharses. I think that often the material we grab from the darkest parts of our mind is the most easily relatable, often to a frightening degree. In putting my worst shit out on the page, maybe you’ll find that a lot of us share the same dark parts floating around our heads. So here it is, a quick little sketchbook, diary, re-visitation, exploration, etc, of some of the little black things running around in my head and how I learned to get on their level and play patty cake with them."

STORYTIME | How I Became the Man I Am Today By Amazon Customer This is one of the most impressive pieces of literature of the modern age; thus, I expect it to be included in the American literary canon within the next decade. This story of love, loss, and what he wore changed my outlook on the meek point of view that this capitalist society has provided us with. From now on, I will look down, from the new intellectual heights I have reached, upon the rest of the world in a most charitable point of view.

These are the poems I seek. These are the poems that resonate with me; that speak to me. I demand highly literate, technically adept, and intelligent verse when I read poetry and this is exactly what I got upon reading Rufus Skeen’s debut collection, ‘Lost For Words.’ Shades of Merwin, Sandburg, Frost, Gunn . . . these poems are that good I compare them with the greats. I feel privileged to have read this special and powerful collection. If you love good poetry, that is equal parts sensitive and cerebral, philosophical and celebratory, hopeful and ruminative – look no further. A wonderful collection. - William Cook, author of Corpus Delicti, and Gaze into the Abyss: The Poetry of Jim Morrison.

Lost for Words: Selected Poetry, by Rufus Skeens

Review  Reading his collection of poetry you find yourself traveling, seeing the small, sometimes surprising beauty's of nature and of the Appalachias. But then...so much more; life, death, Black Lung, a collection of moments and places. Some whimsical, some poignant but all seized and held up for us to see in a different light, a different angle. Yes...it really IS that good. Allow yourself the pleasure of reading this; Lost For Words by Rufus A. Skeens"                                 -- Jaye Tomas - author of Carnevale & Nocturnes  "Skeens' poetry is penned with a deft eloquence, painting bucolic snapshots of Appalachian life and lore. Hounds, guns, coal, faith, and mortality, all brought forth through an idyllic and contemplative scope that soothes as much as it stimulates. Lost for Words is a virtuoso debut. -                                     Benjamin Blake, author of Southpaw Nights.""Lost for words is a magnificent collection and Rufus Skeen's poetry is like a beautiful river, both strong and delicate, changing with the seasons - sometimes welcoming, sometimes dangerous, but always fascinating. A must read."   Seb Doubinsky"These are the poems I seek. These are the poems that resonate with me; that speak to me. I demand highly literate, technically adept, and intelligent verse when I read poetry and this is exactly what I got upon reading Rufus Skeen's debut collection, 'Lost For Words.' A wonderful collection. --  William Cook, author of Corpus Delicti, and Gaze into the Abyss: The Poetry of Jim Morrison.

About the Author Lost for Words is Rufus Skeens’ first volume of poetry. His poetry has been widely published in regional poetry journals, including the Sow’s Ear Review, A! Magazine for the Arts, Red River Review, Now & Then, and Appalachian Heritage, to name a few. Skeens is a retired coal miner who bases his poetry from a working man’s perspective. In his writings, Skeens attempts to cover moments in intense analysis, rather than attempting to write about disparate incidents spanning days, weeks, or years. Thus, Skeens’ viewpoint often radically diverges from the common poet’s rambling attempts to describe time and place with clarity. Skeens believes he can competently describe the intensity inherent in a moment, creating a mood that’s ultimately sensitive, yet vivid in detail. As a backdrop for Skeens’ poetry, he makes use of his life experiences growing up, and working in the coalfields of Southern Appalachia. Poverty, sweat, sorrow---Skeens has lived it, and rather than allow the region’s constraints to limit his imagination, he has used his hard-earned experience to give birth to poetry. His poetry. Skeens has won numerous awards for his writing skills, but takes far more pride in watching someone read and enjoy his poems than focus on who has won this or won that. Mr. Skeens currently resides in Bristol, Virginia. He came of age in the vast mountains of Grundy, Virginia, where coal is the king who has been dethroned.

Drawing on a lifetime spent in Appalachia, Skeens captures verbal Poloroids of the world around him. Skeens is a poet to watch as we'll be hearing much from him.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful poems, subpar editing By Amazon Customer In the poems of Rufus Skeens' Lost for Words, we see a deep mind and spirit trying to live in a world too often undercut by grief. Skeens' images of Appalachia are sensuous and affecting. These are important and luminous poems, though they are frequently obscured by poor editing. Anyone who cares about Appalachian literature should buy and read this book, take joy in these fine poems, and hope for a more competent edition to come.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Simply Wonderful.... By Amazon Customer "Lost for Words" by Rufus Skeens is a beautiful and touching book of poetry. His deft touch and insight, his imagery and use of metaphor, directly flies in the face of outsiders who so harshly and falsely write about Appalachians. Mr. Skeens doesn't judge us. He is one of us. Sad, sorrowful, hopeful, his poetry defies stereotype, uplifts us as a people. These poems move me, tell the story of an Appalachian life lived. From black lung, to the sorrow suffered at a grandmother's wake, these poems are touching, heartfelt, unique. Mr. Skeens doesn't tell his readers how to feel an Appalachian life. He opens his heart, and shows them.

Powerful, healing words given in poetry.

It is indeed good news.

Faced with drastic life changes, Jo Anne C. Blackman found herself a captive to words. As she journeyed through riveting heartfelt experiences, she found comfort and hope at the touch of a keyboard, unaware that sixty days later she would write a book. What followed was an increasingly steady flow of rhymes.

These poems will draw you along, page after page, into deep reflections about placing God first in our lives. Sections include inspiration, appreciation, and relationships-even, believe it or not, flying pigs. This book will arouse your emotions and move you to keep hope alive and believe!

About the Author:

Today, Eder is a successful New York entrepreneur in the online media industry and CEO of a digital marketing company. However, as a kid in the mid-80s, he fled a frightening home life and wound up living for years on the streets of Medellin, Colombia. It was a dicey existence, in what was described during this era as the "most dangerous place on Earth", where international drug lords like Pablo Escobar ruled, where you could be shot for looking at the wrong guy the wrong way.

Dreaming of Hope Street is the story of how he went from living in the streets to become a successful entrepreneur. The book is in the classic coming-of-age tradition, and proves that, though life can be ugly and brutal, even the most disadvantaged can overcome the odds and find happiness, their own Hope Street. The narrative steps along and rings with authenticity; it's often sad, shocking, but ultimately uplifting and motivational.

The book is easy to read and it only took me about 10 days to get through it.The narrative is very real and it paints a picture of a very real place, filled with powerful emotions. I felt the pain, humor and even felt transported to Medellin during the time I was reading it.There is a great lesson to be taken from this book and it is to never give up on your dreams. I think that was the part that I enjoyed the most about it.
