From-the-Heart Creative Expression & Powerful Personal-Political Critique By Julie Todd Timothy “TMZ” McGhee’s first volume of poetry really IS more than just ink. This collection of seventeen poems reflects the writer’s spirit, grit and experience. It is an honest portrayal of the author himself as a young, black creative in the United States. Subjects range from the intensely personal to the profoundly political; from drinking, money, fatherhood, womanhood and family, vulnerability and intimacy, to the American school system, black culture, art, hip-hop, economics and religion. It becomes obvious that the author is as literate in topics of social injustice as he is literate in his own soul.Upon searching for more of the artist’s work online (www.creativegeneus.com), one finds that he is more than a poet. He is a spoken word artist and creative performer across multiple media and performative styles. It is perhaps for this reason, his clear skills for spoken word performance, that sometimes his rhymes do not translate as well on the page. These rhymes may resonate more powerfully heard than read. Also, the format of the e-book may not necessarily help in translating the author’s natural rhythm and flow.I admire McGhee for how much of his raw thought and self he puts on the page for others to read and feel. His meditations on what it means to hold counter-cultural values in the midst of the so-called American dream hold lessons for us all. The writer exemplifies how to free our minds through artistic expression from the dangerous ideologies of gender, wealth and racism, which hold many of us captive. Our communities need to listen to and practice more of this kind of from-the-heart creative expression and confident personal-political exploration and critique.

Although she’d spent her teenage years collecting and recording quotes and ideas that moved her, it wasn’t until the death of her grandfather that Karen O’Leary found her poetic voice—and the confidence to introduce her gift to others. After delivering a eulogy for her beloved grandfather, O’Leary realized that people were moved both by her experiences and her expression of them—and that she must listen to the voice inside compelling her to share her work with the world.

In Soul, her debut collection, O’Leary treats readers to poems intended to pluck at their heartstrings and gently guide them to contemplate what lies at the core of their being.

Drawing from her own life—her relationships, triumphs, hardships, fears, and hopes—O’Leary captures the essence of a soulful existence in an accessible, resonant voice, welcoming people of all ages and experience into her poetry.

So make a cup of tea and curl up in your favorite chair with this collection of moving, thought-provoking poems, and prepare to be stirred to the depths of your soul.

This carefully crafted ebook: “An Enemy of the People: A play in five acts” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents.

An Enemy of the people is an 1882 play by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. Ibsen wrote it in response to the public outcry against his play Ghosts, which at that time was considered scandalous. Ghosts had challenged the hypocrisy of Victorian morality and was deemed indecent for its veiled references to syphilis.

Henrik Johan Ibsen (1828 – 1906) was a major 19th-century Norwegian playwright, theatre director, and poet. He is often referred to as "the father of realism" and is one of the founders of Modernism in theatre. His major works include Brand, Peer Gynt, An Enemy of the People, Emperor and Galilean, A Doll's House, Hedda Gabler, Ghosts, The Wild Duck, Rosmersholm, and The Master Builder.

Ibsen on the conflict between idealism and practicality By Lawrance Bernabo Henrik Ibsen is the father of modern drama and his 1882 drama "An Enemy of the People" ("En folkefiende") was one of his more controversial works. In the play Dr. Stockmann discovers that the new baths built in his town are infected with a deadly disease that requires they should be closed until they can be repaired. However, the mayor of the town (the Burgomaster), who is Stockmann's brother Peter, rejects the report and refuses to close the baths because it will bring about the financial ruin of the town. When Dr. Stockmann tries to make his case to the people of the town, the mayor counters by pointing out how expensive it would be to repair the baths and dismisses the doctor for having wild, fanciful ideas. At the public meeting Dr. Stockmann is declared "an enemy of the people" by the Burgomaster. To really appreciate this particular Ibsen play you have to look at it in the context of his previous dramas, because they all represent a conflict between the playwright and his critics. In 1879 Ibsen's play "A Doll's House" ("Et dukkehjem") was produced, wherein the character of Nora pretends to be a silly little wife in order to flatter her husband, who is revealed to be a hypocritical fraud. The idea that a woman would leave her husband and children was seen as being outrageous and basically obscene. Ibsen upset his audience and critics even more in his next play, "Ghosts" ("Gengangere"), an 1881 drama that again attacks conventional morality and hypocrisy. The topic is of congenital venereal disease but the true subject is moral contamination. Mrs. Alving has buried her husband, a degenerate who has left behind a son dying from syphilis and an illegitimate daughter who is probably going to end up being a prostitute. The play ends with Mrs. Alving having to decide if she should poison her son to put him out of his misery or let his agonies persist.Again, Ibsen was attacked for outraging conventional morality. The following year after "Ghosts" the playwright responded with "An Enemy of the People" and the character that is most identified with representing Ibsen on stage in Dr. Stockmann. The allegory is quite plain when the play is considered within the context of Ibsen's work during this period, although while Stockmann is portrayed as a victim there is a sense of destructiveness to his behavior. At the end of the play Stockman has decided to leave the town, but then changes his mind to stay and fight for those things he believes are right. As is the case with most of Ibsen's classic works, "An Enemy of the People" speaks to larger issues than those in conflict in the play. The debate is over the bad water pipes at the new baths, but the true conflict is over the clash of private and public morality. Dr. Stockmann is by far the most idealistic of Ibsen's characters, and that fact that he is opposed by his own brother, the Burgomaster, harkens back to Genesis and the fight between Cain and Able. As was the case with "Ghosts," there is an ambiguous ending where what happens next can be seen as going either way given your own inclinations as a member of the audience. Both of the Stockman brothers are flawed. Dr. Stockman's idealism is at odds with the practical realities of the world in which he lives while the Burgomaster ignores ethical concerns. Ultimately, Ibsen is not forcing us to choose between the two but rather to reject both in terms of some middle ground. The Burgomaster is certainly old school, believing those in authority get to make all the decisions and that the people must subordinate themselves to the society. But he was the one who made the mistake of putting the new water pipes in the wrong place, so even his claims that he is looking out for the welfare of the community are dishonest. Dr. Stockman argues for individual freedom and the right of free expression, but his attempt to fix the problem ignores any effort at persuasion or building public support. He also seems to take pleasure in be able to show that his brother made a mistake. Still, in the end we have to favor the doctor over the mayor because his integrity is clearly stronger, while still recognizing that his idealism is tragically flawed.

14 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Great Play but the Introduction is Lacking By A Customer This powerful play is my first experience reading Henrik Ibsen and WOW! The conflict is timeless and the leading character Dr. Stockmann reminded me of Sir Thomas More. After I read the play I did not want to put the book down and wanted more. I flipped to the front of my edition translated by Christpher Hampton and read his nihilistic introduction. Mr. Hampton missed the whole point and somehow thought Dr. Stockman really WAS the "enemy of the people". Hampton sounded like one of the townspeople from the mob in Act Four when he wrote:"This is to simplify Ibsen's intent; because however sympathetic Ibsen feels towards Dr Stockmann's cause, he is too subtle and profound a dramatist not to know that there are few figures more infuriating than the man who is always right. Stockmann's sincerity, naivety and courage co-exist with an innocent vanity, an inability to compromise and an indifference to the havoc caused in the lives of his family and friends, as well as his own, by his dogged pursuit of principle."Hampton's edition is a nice size with print that is easy to read. I loved the story and the characters and I highly recommend it to all. I have lived the experience and have been "the enemy" so I understood Dr. Stockmann but I learned from Christopher Hampton and my own experience not everyone will "get it."

Breathtaking, Dreamy, and Whimsical By Elizabeth Mathis Rating: 4.5/5 StarsQuick Reasons: the namesake of her inspiration, hope permeates every word, every line, every page; the writing is descriptive, flowing, and beautiful; there's a sense of journey, a rediscovering of the world—a story forged through years, heartaches, and keeping hope aliveI'm breaking out—into the world of poetry!Of course, that's not to say I wasn't already in that world. What I mean is, I'm breaking into poetry reviews, starting with this one.I received a copy of this collection from the author in exchange for an honest review. This in no way altered or changed how I read, thought about, and will be reviewing this book. Huge thanks to Mel Finefrock for requesting my feedback and offering up this opportunity!I want to start out with probably the most obvious thing ever: The cover is absolutely gorgeous. There's a whimsical, dream-like quality to the painting. I can imagine being in that park myself—the trees in full fall plummage above my head, the pavement slick with recent rain, colors dancing and swirling all around. Going into a book of poetry with such a vibrant, festive image in mind really helped set the tone and get my sense of wonder spinning. (For those interested, the artist is John Bramblitt—you can find out more about him via www.bramblitt.net )Mel Finefrock's poetry, on the other hand, helped to ground me in a way: emotive, evocative, and breath-taking, the words and worlds she creates wove a sense of dreamy, confident ease around my heart. Drawing inspiration from real-life situations, people, and experiences, Mel Finefrock takes readers on a journey spanning several years and covering some painful, heavy subjects—always with a sense of hope lingering at the very end, a sense of “It's okay; I haven't reached the very bottom yet.”The journey is quick in words...but so long in years coming for the author, who pairs both older pieces and new in a way that tells a story: of dreams fading, of wishes forgotten or broken, of hopes crushed and built back up. There's a quiet beauty to the space between her words, a place readers are invited into—to dream, to hope, and to fly with the poet.I really enjoyed stepping, just for a moment, into Mel Finefrock's life and viewing the world the way she strives to: with inspiration, with adulation, with wonder and awe. I highly recommend to lovers of poetry, to seekers of beauty, and to poets seeking a muse. If you're lost and not sure what you're looking for, perhaps you should start here; you might make a discovery of your own.

A Wellspring of Well-crafted Words By Kelly Warren Warm, rapid micro-pulses of anticipatory adrenaline acutely called my inhaling heart and mind to complete attention, and then I smiled, exhaled, and settled in for the ride. That was upon reading the preface of this precious little book. What followed was an endearing journey through pages of vibrant colors, resonating sounds, and gripping imagery that repeatedly reiterated prolific scenes of exquisite detail, induced via a vast multi-sensory repertoire of language that kept my imagination on the edge of its seat. There's a curious mobility in Finefrock's phrases. It's as if she holds your hand and gracefully guides you along the path of what she sees. You'll want to linger at many points along the path and soak up the experience. Her words will not only abide, but will also encourage your consummation. That is an attribute of a brilliant poet, one who understands that meaningful poetry is derived from patience, and is meant to instill that same enduring patience in the hearts of its readers.Additionally, you will find your eyes affixed, no doubt in captivated awe , on the front cover which features the incomparable artwork of John Bramblitt. When I first discovered his art, it prompted a two word description: psychedelia tamed! Bramblitt's mastery of interspersing the intensity of colors always culminates in a dazzling menagerie of strikingly loud yet gently harmonious hues. The complementary and extraordinary nature of Finefrock's and Bramblitt's art combine to compel us to reinterpret the "dis" of disability as the dynamic, driving force of creative diversity!

As we grew older and she honed her art, I grew into an editor looking for something truly impressive to hold in my hands. Mel has crafted just that - an impressive articulation of life that I can hold in my hands.Patchwork Poetry is an intricate quilt of love, loss, insecure bravery and detail. Her vision of this world is beyond that of any normal person, she breaths life and light into the mundane. Enjoy her poems and see how simple tea roars into yesterday's lessons.Mel Finefrock's Patchwork Poetry reflects the beginning of her career as a beautiful and complex poetess. To quote her,"Yes ... this time it's baby stepsbut even thosecover ground."
