More on the stars, counting, and my rating challenges later. Those of you who are fascinated with concepts of spririt versus flesh, or alternate ‘polarities’ of behaviour, will find this work both complicated and interesting. Since I am not so inclined, my personal rating may be less than yours. Let’s get on with a ‘traditional’ review of Hill’s work. There are fresh and interesting images, as in In Inside Job: “Spirit knocking like a glowworm /Encased in a fist.” Again in Mental Stimulation: “Engage me with mourning metaphors and singing similes.” In the prose piece which serves as the epilogue, A Note on My Spirituality, this: “I wanted to go back to the girl I had buried. //Thankfully, she was ready to breathe.”There are exact and close rhymes. These are relaxed and well done. For a strange relationship, turn to Distant Lover, which has a surprise ending which was set up by the title. As always, Google anything you don’t understand. “Bishop Syndrome” came up with a chapter in an eBook which was quite relevant. This inReflections on the Ghetto. Those of us who’ve barely or never seen such conditions will learn something from this short piece. For another unusual perspective on being human, turn to The Science of it All. Then Cannibalistic. Those scrolling for the tiny carps can give up here. One possible thing I didn’t get, and perhaps an extra end of sentence. These are well within a poet’s freedoms, so in short, nothing. Let’s get back to Hill’s work.I’d like to mention Reflections on Manifestations: “For some reason when we pray we expect to find a pretty box at the door.” Another favourite is A Boy’s Magic, which is quite sad. Finally, I suggest you turn to the short poem, Reflections on Suicide. Back to the star count.Star counts are hard. Mine are supposed to reflect the power of communication I see in a work. When the author’s background is sufficiently different from my own, I have to rate what I see, which may not be what you see. My personal guidelines, when doing an ‘official’ KBR review, are as follows: five stars means, roughly equal to best in genre. Rarely given. Four stars means, extremely good. Three stars means, definitely recommendable. I am a tough reviewer. I try hard to be consistent. I’m sure you’ll agree that three stars is easily justified, and your personal rating may well be higher. Clearly recommended.Kindle Book Review Team member.(Note: this reviewer received a free copy of this book for an independent review. He is not associated with the author or Amazon.)

Hill’s poetries were strongly influenced by the urge to break out of the norm, to stop trying to fit into the society’s definition of normal and good and upright; the author expresses that within them lies a battle, a war. However, whether the battle was a win or a loss did not matter, because comfort was found in the fight. What flowed from Hill’s thoughts and ideas were that of religious tolerance; that it ought to be subjective and not objective. That one should find peace in whatever they choose and not what is supposedly right; and that in their choice, they are comfortable enough to stand criticism. The author perceives the world and all its aspects; love, hate, suffering; to all being an echo. That whatever one sends to the universe, it comes back. There is more than what meets the eye, Hill urges readers that they should not just live life by trying to stay alive; rather they should make meaning of each passing moment.

Nothing but herself to rely on By Vanessa Hoffmann This book is a beautiful collection of poems that have kept the author alive during her journey to finding herself. But it is more than just a poetry collection. You can literally feel the passion from every word and how helpless the author felt in certain times of her life. She also tries to show you that there is more to life than what you can see in front of you. I found it a wonderful idea to basically write a sort of biography in form of poetry. To all fans of poems and biographies I highly recommend reading this book. It is a great read for anyone though, because her battle will take you in and at the same time inspire you to change your own life for the better. After reading Combative Polarities by Nik Hill I feel content and at peace.5 Stars!
