By Amy Carpenter-Leugs These poems are haunting and clear -- even those who aren't familiar with poetry will find Crowd of Sorrows to be easily understood. The poems take us through the narrative as told by a little girl who is surviving sexual abuse by her grandfather. Over time the girl grows up, tells her secret, and observes all the ways she is changed by what has happened to her. The book is beautifully produced and rich with Lisa Gundry's well-wrought images and memorable voices. Many survivors of sexual abuse will find validation and understanding of their experience here, and anyone who loves a survivor or wants to understand them better will be moved and shaken by this collection.
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Beautifully written! By Kate Sinkins Lisa's book captures the essence of a young girl who doesn't understand what is happening to her. She moves into how family relationships are affected and how she has worked to process these events that should never happened to anyone. She writes with grace and anger and empowerment and forgiveness. It is not a book you can read all at once but something to return to when you want to see how powerful words can be. I highly recommend it and can't wait for her next book!
