By Ben Eads Dark Parchments does what every good poetry collection should: elicit emotions from the reader they didn’t even know they had, or worse, forgotten. Or, as is the case with this collection, send shivers up our spines as we’re treated to dark, horrible things that dwell in the darkest depths of nature—but sometimes that very darkness lies within us.I haven’t read poetry in too many years to count. However, I’ve read three poetry collections this year and each one has left me embarrassed for this transgression. As the author of the foreword asks, “Where are the lyrical poets of today?” Mr. Hanson has proved that not only can he write lyrical poetry, but poetry that speaks directly to our heart—forcing us to look in the mirror for what ails us, challenges us.To say this collection of poetry is emotive would be an understatement. Mr. Hanson’s fine collection will have you looking over your shoulder during an evening stroll; second guess our sanity when the rain falls…and is that something squirming right outside my window? One thing is certain, it’s a top-rate collection from an author whose career is destined to be a long one. Words have power…and the author understands this better than most of us. It’s one of the highest compliments I can give.

If You Die Tonight, This Is What You'll Dream By Jessica Salmonson I've been reading DARK PARCHMENTS with considerable delight, a collection of sinister poetry that is a throw-back to an age of impassioned angst enclosed by rhyme and structure, all wondrously gloomy. These are great poems to be sad with, but also to raise in the reader an aesthetic feeling, or even a cruel laugh. In "She Dreams of Ravens" we learn of "strange dark-winged vigilantes" of Romanticist reflection; or the whimsically grotesque ruminations of the "Nevada Test Site Mannequins" filled with their own likely-misplaced sense superiority. The quality of the trade paperback is also pleasing.

I envy the author because I wish I had written some of those poems. They were that good. The six that stood out in this reviewer's mind was: "Coming Home," "Working Class Apotheosis," "Shunned," "Aging Poet In a Soho Tavern," "Wisdom From An Itinerant L.A. Guru," and "The Tapestry." These and others show the author's insight into human nature as well as the magical and dark side of life. It is truly difficult to tell stories in the form of the short poem, but Michael Hanson did it magnificently. There are strains of Poe as well as existentialism that run through his poetry. I most certainly recommend this collection to anyone interested in quality poetry.
