'My song is a shovel against the dirt': beautiful poetry by Nelson Miranda By Marinca Reading these enigmatically titled poems, what is immediately apparent is the atmosphere. A world is built out of sound and imagery, where rhymes subtly underline meaning and rhythms give a trance-like feel. Dreamlike scenes are intercut with images that feel like a vivid, alternative reality. Because each title is of an entity, "The Wolf", "The Truth", "The Highway", "The Wish", there is a sense almost as if each poem is an introduction, a development of a character perceived through the speaker's eyes. There is often a sense of eternal truths told with the quiet intensity of a tale passed on down ages, as in "The Samurai":Upon the wings of a glorious phoenixThe flames fuse together tattered skinFilled with a new found vigorMelding glory over an abundance of sinBreaking deep into the encampmentCrashing down from the skies aboveThis forged steel shall taste victoryEmptying my heart of misguided loveA restless darkness that permeates these poems, but it is always lyrical:From "The Mathematician":A tenth of me is utterly brokenTrenching through devoid marshlandsThe hourglass splintered against timeAs palm races to catch dwindling sandThe world delineated here is one that is absolutely worth discovering. There is a thorough sense of inspiration, of the language tripping a switch which leads to more poetry automatically forming in the reader's mind. I thoroughly recommend immersing yourself in these poems.

100 pages of illustrations and dark poetry How to Read This Book: This ebook is best viewed on a tablet (like an iPad) or color e-reader (like a Kindle Fire) to fully appreciate the images. To zoom in on the illustrations, you may need to double tap on the image before widening your pinched fingers on the screen. *** This book. It is odd. It makes little to no sense at times. Also may seem dark. This is all a jumble of my actions, thoughts, and emotions put in words and random pictures I drew myself. The reason? Depression. I’ve lived though some darkness, some experiences that were really bad, and some not so bad. But in the end those experiences may have no meaning or connection to anyone out there. The one thing the poems all have in common, is they were all written during lows. Moments of intense darkness. Oddly some aren’t that dark considering. My main reason for exploiting my mind is really something that I struggled with my entire life. The concept of “alone”. And I hope that my dark thoughts help at least one of you realize that you are not. Even in the darkest, most painful, most lonely times of your life just know, that there are lots of us in those same shadows as you. And despite our darkness and demons, we get you, and are here for you, even if just to sit with you among the shadows. ~Ani

The furious flow of life often denies us pause for reflection. Like dreams in an awakened state, our most poignant moments in this world tend to drift away before we are ever able to fully behold them. In her debut collection of poetry, WITNESS TO A BLACKOUT, Ursula Black defiantly drops anchor midstream, casting lines into the depths of her humble existence to capture those flashes in time that resound with meaning. Original art illustrates the compilation.

2016 BEST FIRST BOOK (FICTION) SILVER MEDAL IBPA BENJAMIN FRANKLIN AWARDS / 2015 BOOK OF THE YEAR FINALIST (ROMANCE) FOREWORD REVIEWS INDIEFAB AWARDS - The Poet's Secret is an upmarket romantic suspense adventure novel powered by two remarkable yet fractured characters: Elia Aloundra, a young lit student, and Cameron Beck, the reclusive, suicidal poet she is on a quest to find. Decades earlier, Beck penned his acclaimed masterwork inspired by an anonymous muse, only to thereafter disappear. Elia always found sanctuary within the works of the literary greats and considered Beck worthy of that pantheon. Hoping that the poet will unveil the secret to eternal love, Elia faces off with Beck's protective circle on an exotic island hideaway, the same island where decades earlier a Spanish shipwreck entombing mystical Aztec relics was found. What Elia cannot fathom is that Beck's secret will change both of their lives forever.Declared "a lyrical tour de force" by Foreword Reviews, The Poet's Secret was a Golden Heart Finalist selection by the Romance Writers of America and is filled with aquatic imagery and subtle conservation and slow movement themes.  Drawing influences from Pablo Neruda, Rumi, Wallace Stevens, Paulo Coelho, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and Haruki Murakami, the author begins each chapter with brief excerpts of poetry from the reclusive poet before moving into the narrative prose. Kenneth Zak conceived The Poet's Secret in a hovel perched atop a one-table taverna in the hillside village of Avdou, just a scooter ride from the blue waters of the Aegean Sea on the island of Crete.  At the time, he was on a three-year personal pilgrimage writing, surfing, swimming and slowing down his existence.  Penju Publishing is a member of 1% For the Planet, dedicating 1% of sale proceeds from The Poet's Secret to conservation causes. In addition, the author, an avid surfer, will donate $1 for every book sold to Surfrider Foundation, an organization dedicated to preserving our oceans and beaches. The poem "Two Bits" from The Poet's Secret previously appeared in Kelp Magazine. Zak's short fiction "A Promise" appeared in A Year in Ink, San Diego Writers, Ink Anthology, Volume 4 and his short fiction "Thea" appeared in A Year in Ink, San Diego Writers, Ink Anthology, Volume 8. The Poet's Secret is his debut novel. For more information, please visit kennethzak.com and Kenneth Zak Author on Facebook.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Steamy and satisfying read. By Nancy M. Chavez First let me say that I know the author. He's an acquaintance more than a friend. I confess this fact in the interest of full disclosure. I picked up to book both to be supportive and out of curiosity because Ken is someone I know. Now for the review:Nicholas Sparks, who? The Poet's Secret had it all for me. It was romantic; it had subtext; some parts were steamy and I'm not talking about the tropical location of the book (I'll never look at Ken the same way...I'm just sayin'). The descriptions of the locales and the people created a fantastic visual for the story. The ending is what I was hoping for and although not a total shocker, it came together in a satisfying way and if it had been any different I'd have been disappointed. This is a really really good read and I enjoyed every minute of it.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The perfect vacation book. By Bob Johnson Great read! Interesting characters and well developed plot line. Left me wishing it was longer when I finished it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Loved the story line! By Angela I was introduced to this novel with the teaser that if I loved The English Patient (which I did) that I would enjoy this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book for use in a blog review. All opinions are my own.The Poet’s Secret is told from a 3rd Person Perspective. 9 times out of 10--I prefer a 3rd person narrative in the books I read. There is so much more opportunity to learn about the thoughts and perspectives of the all-important supportive characters in such a book. When the narrator is sharing his point of view--the reader is left with more questions than answers at times--and those supporting characters aren't able to live up to their potential. Zak develops a much more complete story with this 3-part narrative from his three main characters. The Poet’s Secret is a story that readers will not be able to put down. I was drawn immediately into the storyline and the characters' lives. I became invested in their stories--and simply found the book nearly impossible to set aside. I needed to follow the story to its end. This book is a romance--but, a life story as well--and it is a full story with readers sharing the opportunity to revisit the past with the story's characters and share in the present as each one shared perspectives and events.Would I recommend The Poet’s Secret by Kenneth Zak. Zak does a wonderful job bringing readers into the setting and surrounding readers with the story. While this book was not as compelling as The English Patient for me--it was still a very good book. I felt that Zac handled the transitions between characters well to limit confusion although each one was not given individual voices. If you love a well rounded romance with a human element, detailed settings and something more than dialogue driven text--this book was very well written with well developed characters and well placed scenes.

Mary Ann Evans (22 November 1819 – 22 December 1880; alternatively "Mary Anne" or "Marian"), known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist, journalist, translator and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. She is the author of seven novels, including Adam Bede (1859), The Mill on the Floss (1860), Silas Marner (1861), Middlemarch (1871–72), and Daniel Deronda (1876), most of them set in provincial England and known for their realism and psychological insight. She used a male pen name, she said, to ensure her works would be taken seriously. Female authors were published under their own names during Eliot's life, but she wanted to escape the stereotype of women only writing lighthearted romances. She also wished to have her fiction judged separately from her already extensive and widely known work as an editor and critic. An additional factor in her use of a pen name may have been a desire to shield her private life from public scrutiny and to prevent scandals attending her relationship with the married George Henry Lewes, with whom she lived for over 20 years. Her 1872 work Middlemarch has been described by Martin Amis and Julian Barnes[3] as the greatest novel in the English language (font: Wikipedia)

Felix Holt the Radical, by George Eliot

About the Author George Eliot was the pseudonym for Mary Anne Evans, one of the leading writers of the Victorian era, who published seven major novels and several translations during her career. She started her career as a sub-editor for the left-wing journal The Westminster Review, contributing politically charged essays and reviews before turning her attention to novels. Among Eliot s best-known works are Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss, Silas Marner, Middlemarch and Daniel Deronda, in which she explores aspects of human psychology, focusing on the rural outsider and the politics of small-town life. Eliot died in 1880.

42 of 43 people found the following review helpful. Felix Holt - A Literary Hero to Fall in Love with... By anna-joelle This is my 4th novel by George Eliot (after "Adam Bede", "Middlemarch" and "The Mill on the Floss") and it has become my favourite along with "Middlemarch". "Felix Holt" is so marvelously written and gave me many hours of reading pleasure - I can't understand why it's not as highly acclaimed or well-known as Eliot's other novels. If you're a fan of Victorian literature, then you mustn't miss this brilliant work. The story's set in the 1830s and is 1/3 focused on politics (i.e. a fascinating insight into the electioneering process and the fight for a Parliamentary seat between the Torys and the Radicals), 1/3 on family and sensational issues (e.g. illegitimacy, dispute over who has the legitimate claim on the wealthy estates of the Transome family and plenty of blackmail, manipulation and betrayals) and 1/3 devoted to a love triangle.George Eliot wrote so eloquently and beautifully that many times I find myself re-reading a particular phrase in order to saviour its beautiful words. Each chapter also starts with either a beautiful poem or some well-chosen lines from Shakespeare/the Classics. Here's a favourite of mine from Chapter 45 (a poem by Eliot):"We may not make this world a paradiseBy walking it together with clasped handsAnd eyes that meeting feed a double strength. We must be only joined by pains divine,Of spirits blent in mutual memories".I confess that above all, it is the suspense over the touching love story that kept me turning the pages very quickly. The hero is Felix Holt, a passionate, idealistic young man who studies medicine but chooses to quit midway and forgo a comfortable future as a doctor in favour of leading the more righteous life (in his opinion) of an ordinary, poor workingman because of his scorn for wealth and its corrupting powers. Felix is described as honest, brusque, generous and highly intelligent. He's got "wild hair", dresses simple and to his own liking e.g. not wearing a cravat "like all the other gentlemen", and sometimes looks like a "barbarian". He patronizes no one and is rather unpopular in the town of Treby Magna where the story takes place. His political views are Radical (i.e. more severe than the Liberals) but his main concerns are for the well-being of the working class and especially the future of their children. (Read the excellent "Address to Working Men by Felix Holt" which comes after the Epilogue). Felix's good intentions land him in great trouble with the law later on when a massive riot breaks out among the drunk working class directly after the election and Felix is wrongly accused of being the leader of the mob.Early on in the novel, Felix is introduced to the heroine, Esther Lyon (the beautiful daughter of a poor chapel minister) whose vanity and high-bred manner he scorns. He rebukes and lectures her constantly in that straight-forward and honest manner of his because he cares to improve her views on what are truly the important things in life. Esther dislikes him utterly at first... she cannot understand why Felix doesn't admire her beauty and graceful manners like other young men do. Esther is vain and proud (at least, initially) and has always dreamed of leading a better life, with fineries and beautiful clothes and servants to do her bidding. And Felix Holt is definitely not her idea of a lover! But Esther is not unkind or ungenerous - she loves her father dearly and treats everyone well. Gradually, she begins to see the true nature of Felix's character and noble aims, and holds him in great esteem, despite his outward looks and manners. But Felix has declared never to marry and if he were ever to fall in love, he would just "bear it and not marry" (preferring to "wed poverty"). Later in the novel, Esther is courted by the rich and handsome Harold Transome whose initial reason for wooing her is to save his family estates. But he doesn't count on falling in love with her subsequently.Who does Esther ends up with finally: Felix or Harold? But take it from me that the romantic scenes between Felix and Esther are the most passionate and heart-wrenching I've ever come across in a classic literature - with many kisses and hugs amidst pure longing and despair, and scenes filled with beautifully spoken words of affection which brought tears to my eyes. For many, many reasons, "Felix Holt" makes for a most brilliant read. I urge you not to miss it.

Incomparable By Maggie Tulliver Some might say nothing can equal Middlemarch as Eliot's greatest work but I think that even if Felix Holt doesn't rank alongside it in literature, it should be given at least an equal status. The novel deals with provincial politics in nineteenth century England through the mouthpiece of one of the best male protagonists ever drwan in literature by a female writer. As in all her books, Eliot is sharp in her details, the satire is poignant and she doesn't miss out on humor. Feminism takes a different turn here, with telling criticisms on the way females were brought up at that time and in many third world countries, still are brought up.Eliot is never bitter, never hopeless, yet always realistic and idealistic with this difference: she doesn't let it get out of control. Fear not: mawkish is the last thing this book is. Some details might seem to be superfluous but it adds up to showing the literary prowess of this great woman, and is very helpful in letting you understand the real stuff going on at that time. A good, very well-written socio-political novel, that depicts the atmosphere of its time with more accuracy than many other books I've read.Eliot does have the most amazing ability to get into her characters' minds. although this book is an all rounder in the sense that it comments on most social issues, the two main intimate themes of the books are personal to the central character, Felix, the most "alive" hero of nineteenth century literature: his politics and his love interest, in herself a very compelling and subtly drwan character.Worth reading for all Eliot, Dickens, and Hardy fans. Will definitely give you two or three new opinions: even if the time period is different, much of the philosophy of the book is still very relevant.

11 of 13 people found the following review helpful. The Political Novel By schapmock Felix Holt occupies a middle-tier in the critical estimation of Eliot's novels. It is often disparaged as the "political novel," or alternatively "the one where the legal subplot is way too complicated."At first, this seems unfair. The early introduction of Mrs. Transome is a showstopper, heroine Esther Lyon fascinates, and the detailed evocation of 19th century rural politics is through Eliot's narrative magic made riveting. But things do go awry in the second half. A big problem is Felix himself: an idealization of a political view rather than a detailed character, the reader loves him rather less than Eliot seems to intend. The legal schenanigans are intriguing, but the tortuous plot machinations through which Felix comes to be imprisoned are near ridiculous. And finally, Esther experiences her moral conversion rather too quickly and tidily, coming to seem just a sketch for Gwendolyn Harleth in the later Daniel Deronda. Indeed, by book's end the most compelling plot thread standing is that of the unfortunate Mrs. Transome. But to say a book isn't as good as Daniel Deronda isn't much of a criticism. For all its faults, Felix Holt is filled with excellent characters, a strong story, and unparalled insight into both 19th century England and the more universal collisions of morality and politics.

Passing Through Meat Camp is an exploration of places of belonging and identity politics in Appalachia and the Deep South, regions characterized by both bucolic scenery and rampant poverty. The 33 poems contained in this collection thus evoke this distinction. As a Southern writer, Joshua Martin is heavily fascinated by the Southern landscape. He both loves and loathes the South, and its history of violence, instability, religion (and religious hypocrisy), and its inability to come to terms with its volatile past all manifest in Joshua's work. Passing Through Meat Camp further explores his experiences growing up in rural Mississippi and the events that influenced his poetics. Above all else, Passing Through Meat Camp attempts to answer the question of whether or not to love the places you are from, even when those environments contain histories that border on the unthinkable. *Meat Camp is an unincorporated town outside of Boone, NC, and, due to its rural nature, epitomizes the collection as a whole.

This book of devotional meditations is an invitation to step into the heart of the Divine Mother. Her perpetual dance of cosmic bliss plays out through the eons as the creation and dissolution of worlds within worlds. Yet God, in the feminine form of the Mother – as the Absolute made immanent and personal – is ready to shower Her love and affection on any who care to turn their gaze toward Her fiery heart. Each poem is a meditation on the Mother of the universe. Feel Her boundless love and Her healing compassion as the Divine Mother hugs each reader in an embrace of timeless love. Dance with God in the form of the Mother! Revel in the call of the infinite! Open wide the floodgates of bliss as your heart merges in the roaring river of Divine Mother love. “Each poem in this inspired collection is a precious, radiant, tear-drop gem, forged in pure love for Amma. Ethan Walker is a rare find indeed, a heart-on-fire devotional poet who sheds tears for the Divine Mother each day. These poems contain the blessed essence of those tears, and to slowly savor them, like the prasad candies they are, would be a great aid for any spiritual seeker. As mortals in this human life we reach out to "see" God, The Supreme, The Divine, in some "form". Whether we perceive The Divine as Father or Mother, does it matter as long as we are sincerely reaching for and serving God with love? This is a book of insightful and beautiful poetry and pure devotions to God. And how wonderful, "Divine Mother Of The Universe", and we, Her children. This poetry goes deep beyond deep using words and comparisons that open the mind and heart. An excellent guide in the path of spirituality.

“Three points and a poem” was the old stereotypical formula preachers used to use for the structure of their sermons. Kathy Mansfield writes her poems while listening to sermons and reflecting on the meaning of the Bible.

Kathy’s love of poetry began at an early age, but she didn’t start writing her own poems until she was an adult. Inspiration for her Bible poetry came from summers spent with her grandma in Arkansas. “Grandma and I would talk about different Bible stories and about how important God was in our lives. I started to make poems out of some of our favorite Bible passages.”

Find within these pages poems about familiar favorites such as Esther and Ezekiel and about not so familiar biblical characters like Achan, Jael, and Melchizedek. Read about topics such as hope, priorities, and God’s will. The rhythm and meter of each selection will have you recalling pivotal truths and key concepts about passages long after you put the book down.

Read the poems along with your study of a passage in the Bible or as stand alone reminders of familiar stories and biblical truths. Enjoy this collection for yourself, with your family, or even with an audience. Who knows? Perhaps you’ll find inspiration of your own and find yourself writing down your own thoughts . . . and a poem.

Discover God's presence for yourself through Nidhi Kaur's transcendent collection of spiritual-based poetry, My Wedding with Truth.

Through poems such as "The Soul Shall Receive What It Desires," "Blessed Is This Human Form,” and “You Are The Universe" Kaur gives readers hope and guidance in transforming their lives into ones full of happiness and peace.

The average day is filled with stress, both major and mundane—this compilation teaches how to release that tension, forgive those who are causing pain, and live every single day in the present moment.

Kaur knows that for many people, the idea of "God" exists as something other, something that perhaps can only be found within the walls of a church, temple, or a mosque. But she reveals God is all around us—in the nature that surrounds you, as well as in every single human and other living creature.

My Wedding with Truth will help you learn how to see these things for what they really are and begin witnessing true miracles in your life. This kind of unconditional faith will ultimately help you let go of any worldly suffering and, instead, focus on the most powerful energy of all: love.

PALOMO Nidhi Kaur's, My Wedding with Truth is a spiritual and inspirational book with the main goal to guide readers toward love; love of yourself, our world and others around us. Kaur also states that this book is to help her two children Aryan and Nyra, by writing down all of the lessons she's learned throughout her life. This book is the first spiritual/inspirational book I've read, that was non fiction, but still I enjoyed it. My wedding With Truth, shows all, the things that can inspire people to do better in life. I recommend this book to all readers who do or do not believe in love or spiritualism.

‘Lei: A wreath for your soul’ is a collection of short/micro poems that are inspired by nature and reflect on different hues of life. The word ‘lei’ refers to a garland or a wreath in Hawaiian language. In Hawaii, visitors, on arrival, are greeted with a warm ‘aloha’ and adorned with beautiful, fresh ‘lei’ as a symbol of affection. Each poem, in the book is like a fragrant flower, meant to celebrate life, generate positivism, soothe, inspire, nourish and rejuvenate the soul. Emotional and enlightening for any age, the book is composed of four sections: Nature, Life, Inspiration and Illusion. Most of the short poems are written following the Japanese style of micro-poetry (a Haiku or a Tanka). The poems illustrated with soothing imagery, are layered and imaginative, very short and simple to read, and convey a deeper meaning or bring out a new tinge of emotion every time you read them.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Well planned simplicity By Bruce Newman I like to write poetry. A lot of people try to write it without understanding not only the heart required but the diligent labor for the precise words and their arrangement that allow the reader to participate in a grace of understanding. When I read some of my own creations I see where I’ve failed to strive hard enough to do just that. So I read the works of others to see how they handle this holy chore of writing. I ran across the poetry of Somali K. Chakrabarti on a poetry site I frequent. That in turn led me to her book Lei: A wreath for your soul. It doesn’t take long for me to know how far I want go into another’s work. If I don’t perceive quality quickly, I rarely persevere. But quality was apparent from the start.Somali does not launch right into poetry but prepares the reader for what is to come; what she is trying to accomplish. She begins with a brief description of how social media has shaped our communications because the type of poetry she uses in the book, Haiku and Tanka, are suited to the short bursts of words in the digital world. She includes a brief history on these poetic forms that clearly depicts her reason for using them. Thus enlightened the reader is ready for the divisions she has made by creating four categories (Nature, Life, Illusion, Inspiration) to accommodate the nuances of her poems. Each poem is given further expression by a picture and sometimes a quote or brief reference or explanation. This is not one of those books where one must wonder what was meant.Haiku and Tanka, as you learn before you start reading the poems, are meant to convey essence of meaning, so each poem is short and minimal. It reminded me of taste testing chocolates from a large assortment. I can’t say there was a flavor I didn’t like. But there were certain poems that penetrated more than others with me like Soaking in Colours, Rainbow and the Moon, Everest and Fractals in Nature. Those poems are in the Nature section, and Somali has a gift for laying open nature with simple clarity. But my favorite section was Illusion. I particularly liked Spell and Dormant Desires. The pictures and the words worked seamlessly to offer a small but delightful illusion. It would be easy to go on about this small gem of a book. Overall it had the feel of well-planned simplicity. I came to the end feeling a little lighter, that I’d learned something, and that I got more than I paid for.

Lei: A Must Read For Poetry Lovers By Maniparna Sengupta Majumder At the first glance to the book, Lei: A Wreath For Your Soul, which, according to the author, is “inspired by Nature, reflecting on life”, I was quite hopeful of it being a nice read for me. I'm a nature lover and I love to read, write and compose haiku. The book is a collection of poems written mostly in the forms of Japanese haiku (following the 5-7-5 syllable form) and tanka (following the 5-7-5-7-7 form).Somali has categorized her poems under Nature, Life, Illusion, and Inspiration. All four are inseparable, Nature nurtures and inspires life and the latter often makes us wandering in the whirlpool of illusion. The poems make you think, wonder and often you’ll be mesmerized by the way the author has painted the world with words. In poems where the syllables are numbered, one has to be nifty in choosing words, the end effect depending entirely on it. Somali has done it with ease, the readers almost lose themselves in the enjoyment of words.Lei: A Wreath For Your Soul is a breezy read. Like the softness of the fragrant spring breeze, it leaves you in peace and comfort, desiring for more. I especially want to cite this tanka from the collection, this one, I think, has been nicely buoyed by a deep sense of philosophy:Looking back in time, joining dots, I find, a fewmoments, which seemedonce mild, have surreptitiouslyshaped and bent the course of life. The book is an amazing read for all poetry lovers. I hope the author would come up with more of her collection in the future.

Beautiful and beautifully written By Amazon Customer Lei: A Wreath for the Soul is a lyrical tour de force that captures the imagination by subtle degrees. But just like anything organic, the beauty and meaning of the poetry unfolds gradually and shyly, like the perfect flowers the author sometimes writes about. I was captivated by the contrast between the foreward and preface with its intellectual curiosity and the poetry and art itself which was layered and nuanced. The result is a collection of short gems such as Rainbow in the Moon which I reread several times over just for the sheer brilliance of the concept. I won't give anything away but lines such as "borrowed from the sun the waves mirror, photoshop the sky" indicate how textured and evocative the poetry in this book is I wouldn't mind at all if the author looked into the possibility of doing greeting cards or calendars. A little grace and inspiration gleaned from nature go a long way in today's hectic lifestyle.!
