2016 BEST FIRST BOOK (FICTION) SILVER MEDAL IBPA BENJAMIN FRANKLIN AWARDS / 2015 BOOK OF THE YEAR FINALIST (ROMANCE) FOREWORD REVIEWS INDIEFAB AWARDS - The Poet's Secret is an upmarket romantic suspense adventure novel powered by two remarkable yet fractured characters: Elia Aloundra, a young lit student, and Cameron Beck, the reclusive, suicidal poet she is on a quest to find. Decades earlier, Beck penned his acclaimed masterwork inspired by an anonymous muse, only to thereafter disappear. Elia always found sanctuary within the works of the literary greats and considered Beck worthy of that pantheon. Hoping that the poet will unveil the secret to eternal love, Elia faces off with Beck's protective circle on an exotic island hideaway, the same island where decades earlier a Spanish shipwreck entombing mystical Aztec relics was found. What Elia cannot fathom is that Beck's secret will change both of their lives forever.Declared "a lyrical tour de force" by Foreword Reviews, The Poet's Secret was a Golden Heart Finalist selection by the Romance Writers of America and is filled with aquatic imagery and subtle conservation and slow movement themes.  Drawing influences from Pablo Neruda, Rumi, Wallace Stevens, Paulo Coelho, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and Haruki Murakami, the author begins each chapter with brief excerpts of poetry from the reclusive poet before moving into the narrative prose. Kenneth Zak conceived The Poet's Secret in a hovel perched atop a one-table taverna in the hillside village of Avdou, just a scooter ride from the blue waters of the Aegean Sea on the island of Crete.  At the time, he was on a three-year personal pilgrimage writing, surfing, swimming and slowing down his existence.  Penju Publishing is a member of 1% For the Planet, dedicating 1% of sale proceeds from The Poet's Secret to conservation causes. In addition, the author, an avid surfer, will donate $1 for every book sold to Surfrider Foundation, an organization dedicated to preserving our oceans and beaches. The poem "Two Bits" from The Poet's Secret previously appeared in Kelp Magazine. Zak's short fiction "A Promise" appeared in A Year in Ink, San Diego Writers, Ink Anthology, Volume 4 and his short fiction "Thea" appeared in A Year in Ink, San Diego Writers, Ink Anthology, Volume 8. The Poet's Secret is his debut novel. For more information, please visit kennethzak.com and Kenneth Zak Author on Facebook.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Steamy and satisfying read. By Nancy M. Chavez First let me say that I know the author. He's an acquaintance more than a friend. I confess this fact in the interest of full disclosure. I picked up to book both to be supportive and out of curiosity because Ken is someone I know. Now for the review:Nicholas Sparks, who? The Poet's Secret had it all for me. It was romantic; it had subtext; some parts were steamy and I'm not talking about the tropical location of the book (I'll never look at Ken the same way...I'm just sayin'). The descriptions of the locales and the people created a fantastic visual for the story. The ending is what I was hoping for and although not a total shocker, it came together in a satisfying way and if it had been any different I'd have been disappointed. This is a really really good read and I enjoyed every minute of it.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The perfect vacation book. By Bob Johnson Great read! Interesting characters and well developed plot line. Left me wishing it was longer when I finished it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Loved the story line! By Angela I was introduced to this novel with the teaser that if I loved The English Patient (which I did) that I would enjoy this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book for use in a blog review. All opinions are my own.The Poet’s Secret is told from a 3rd Person Perspective. 9 times out of 10--I prefer a 3rd person narrative in the books I read. There is so much more opportunity to learn about the thoughts and perspectives of the all-important supportive characters in such a book. When the narrator is sharing his point of view--the reader is left with more questions than answers at times--and those supporting characters aren't able to live up to their potential. Zak develops a much more complete story with this 3-part narrative from his three main characters. The Poet’s Secret is a story that readers will not be able to put down. I was drawn immediately into the storyline and the characters' lives. I became invested in their stories--and simply found the book nearly impossible to set aside. I needed to follow the story to its end. This book is a romance--but, a life story as well--and it is a full story with readers sharing the opportunity to revisit the past with the story's characters and share in the present as each one shared perspectives and events.Would I recommend The Poet’s Secret by Kenneth Zak. Zak does a wonderful job bringing readers into the setting and surrounding readers with the story. While this book was not as compelling as The English Patient for me--it was still a very good book. I felt that Zac handled the transitions between characters well to limit confusion although each one was not given individual voices. If you love a well rounded romance with a human element, detailed settings and something more than dialogue driven text--this book was very well written with well developed characters and well placed scenes.
