Holbrook I'm blessed to have all of Verna Cole Mitchell's books and like all the others, I fell in love with this one! Every teacher should own a copy, especially every retired teacher. If I could, I'd purchase a copy for every teacher I knew during my teaching days as well as my current teacher friends. The book is nostalgic, sentimental, whimsical, and inspiring all at once. There are poems that made me laugh loudly, remembering the same circumstances that I faced when I taught years ago. Every teacher will remember (with hidden fondness) the mischievous boy who left a trail of paper airplanes in his wake. We all wiped salty tears from the young girl who saw her first boyfriend holding hands with another girl. Verna Mitchell's description of boring teachers' meetings was spot-on and worthy of a guffaw. It would be impossible to choose a favorite poem in this book but "It Was Time (to retire)" came close. I nodded affirmatively with each line, laughed aloud at some, felt nostalgia at others. I remember my first day after retiring, when school buses drove past my kitchen window and I sighed, then smiled broadly as I poured myself another cup of coffee and settled down to lazily read the morning paper.

I grabbed my #2 pencil and gave this book an A+ By BethL Remember growing up, there was that one teacher, the teacher that inspired you,  the teacher that felt more like family?  This book recalls "that one teacher"  and, in fact is written by "that one teacher." This book will transport you back to that classroom, but your vantage point will now be from the other side of the large desk in the front of the room. Grab that apple from the teacher's desk when you're on lunchroom duty. You'll need it as you try to keep a straight face when a boy with size twelve feet parades around the lunch room in a borrowed pair of size six shoes. Smell the French fries, then put on your stern face if one flies your way. This book divulges teacher secrets, like what a teacher does when she discovers that twins have switched places, and what would have made Robert Frost smile. As you read, smell the polished floors in the hallway and hear the locker doors clang. Adventure awaits. No classroom bell on earth will stop you from wanting to finish this in one setting. I grabbed my #2 pencil and gave this book an A+.

Not only is it obvious that she was a wonderful teacher but it is clear that her sense of humour was a great asset in that role. These poems are warm-hearted tales of her secondary teaching days, her students and their personalities and antics. I recommend it to any teacher, ex-teacher (like I am), student or ex-student - and that means everyone. You will recognise the characters - they are types you will have met, and Verna describes them well. It's a reminder too of the wonderful contribution teachers make to students' lives and Verna definitely must have done so.
