The 78 poems within the collection, The Cotton Mill Blues, begin with the author's recall of his experiences at work in a Southern textile factory while still in his teens, and proceed to touch upon, in vivid detail, many of the people and influences from his life in a mid-twentieth century cotton mill village. Ronald Maney's poetry recounts the personal stories and subsequent development of a unique world-view, particularly involving his parents, siblings, and relationships as he began his long career as a public and private school teacher. Many of Maney's poems focus on his attitudes on love, family disfunction, the loss of connections, poverty in a world of burgeoning wealth, and youthful confusion in the troubling era of the 1960's into mature themes of later decades.
