This drama is set in one of the developing towns in the deltas of Nigeria. It is a comedy of distinctive plotting written thoughtfully to evoke laughter at the same time bears an immeasurable message. The story revolves round two witty incompatible ex-convicts deported from Botswana in the southern part of Africa, coming back to their town with highly synchronized scams of manipulating and swindling people in the name of God. The main objective of writing this play is to help curb the increasing trends of falling into the ploys of manipulators who are earnestly seeking for unwary souls to “radicalize” in whatever form, especially in the western world today; and to let people know that religion should not be a tool to harm oneself or others or for the pursuit of some personal or other evil ambitions. If there is one fruit religion should yield in one’s heart that should be love because humankind is one. Love produces tolerance and true friendliness. It enables all despite the massive differences to live together in peace, obey the laws of the land and shun all forms of corruption – especially religious corruption – to move the society forward. This drama is a product of an in-depth research in the various religions of the world: Shintoism, Hinduism, Islam, Taoism, Christianity, Jainism etc., and a certain knowledge about them exhibited in simplest forms in the acts. Despite the fact that many religions of the world preach peace, love and charity, history has shown all we have gotten round the globe are countless plundering, squandering, conflicts and brutal bloodsheds in the name of religion. Then what is the problem? Read through the masterfully crafted acts and discern the answer. This work is a new kind of genre in literature–Poetic-drama–because of the peculiar style in which it is written as well as the sophisticated inclusion of poetry in the prologue.

Cleofas is a masterpiece. Even though it is a Play but its theme is a very serious and heated subject. But how the author walks through it and pacifies all readers in such a way as to make it seem a less serious or heated issue. North in the World presents 121 poems by Rolf Jacobsen (1907-1994), one of Norway's greatest modern poets. Garnering the highest praise of critics, Jacobsen won many of Norway's and Sweden's most prestigious literary awards, including the Swedish Academy's Dobloug Prize and the Grand Nordic Prize, also known as the "Little Nobel." But he also has earned a wide popular audience, because ordinary readers can understand and enjoy the way he explores the complex counterpoint of nature and technology, progress and self-destruction, daily life and cosmic wonder.Drawing from all twelve of his books, and including one poem collected posthumously, North in the World offers award-winning English translations of Jacobsen's poems, accompanied by the original Norwegian texts. The translator, the American poet Roger Greenwald, worked with Jacobsen himself to correct errors that had crept into the Norwegian texts over the years. An in-depth introduction by Greenwald highlights the main features of Jacobsen's poetry, and extensive endnotes, as well as indexes to titles and first lines in both languages, enhance the usefulness of the book for general readers and scholars alike. The result is the definitive bilingual edition of Jacobsen's marvelous poetry.

North in the World: Selected Poems of Rolf Jacobsen, A Bilingual Edition, by Rolf Jacobsen

From Publishers Weekly As translator and American poet Roger Greenwald (Connecting Flight) explains in his introduction to the bilingual volume North in the World: Selected Poems of Rolf Jacobsen, Jacobsen (1907-1994) was one of the first Norwegians to write in unrhymed free verse, to use colloquial speech and to draw on contemporary urban scenes and experiences. These poems, drawn from throughout Jacobsen's career, frequently take up new technologies and the relationship between nature and the man-made world. "Under the gutter gratings, under the moldy stone cellars, under the damp roots of avenues with linden trees and the parks' lawns: The telephone cables' nerve fibers. The gas pipes' hollow veins. Sewers." Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

Review "But up in the day you, of course, are dancing over the asphalt with the soles of your feet on fire, and you have silk against your navel's white eye and a new coat in the sunshine. And up in the light somewhere I, of course, stand and watch how the cigarette's blue soul flutters like a chaste angel through the chestnut leaves toward eternal life. from "Metaphysics of the City"; "Discovering Jacobsen was a joy. I am grateful to his translator, Roger Greenwald." - Czeslaw Milosz; "North in the World struck me with revelatory force. Jacobsen is a brilliant and innovative poet, though his work fits no obvious mold. Roger Greenwald, himself an impressive poet, has done a rare job of translation, creating verbal objects in English that have the urgency, the simplicity, and the necessary, unforgiving depths of great poetry." - Jay Parini

Greenwald's translations of Jacobsen By greene1004 Rolf Jacobsen, who died in 1994, had a poetic career spanning more than 60 years, and Roger Greenwald's translations are a selection of the best of Jacobsen's many collections. The bi-lingual format, with Norwegian and English on facing pages, is an essential part of the reading experience, whether or not you can sound out Norwegian - and investment in a 30 minute-language tape will let you do that in a day: believe me, it is worth it. Even the visual inspection of the Norwegian text conveys an important message about the impact of Jacobsen as a modernist: almost every Norwegian word is shorter than its English conterpart, and the verbal economy in the expression of complex thoughts and ideas - for which Jacobsen strove - is often breathtaking.Jacobsen wrote feelingly and brilliantly about the connections and correspondences between the natural, and the technological/industrial worlds. There are poems about forests, and about "antenna forests," about swarms and crowds, trees and buildings, the dark silence of the winter night, and "Thoughts uopn Listening in on a Radio Telescope."Greenwald's translations are clear, spare, faithful, and elegant - and he knows what they can do and what they cannot - thus the original Norwegian text on the facing pages. There is an intelligent introduction (by Grenwald), and several good photos of Jacobsen - the best of which is certainly the quintessentially Norwegian frontispiece, with Jacobsen, in his 40's, writing outdoors against the background of a weathered ski hut.

I'm a native English speaker who learnt Norwegian later in life, so I really appreciate seeing both versions of each poem side by side. I might have liked a bit more analysis for each poem - explaining any comments the writer himself may have made on the piece, or sharing any widely held beliefs that may exist. This would help readers from the next generation better understand these poems. There are endnotes, but, where present, this is quite often used for translation notes, or explaining stanza spacing alterations.

This book of poetry says it all. A Gift is divided into four sections, and each section has poems that fit the flavor of that section. The "gift" comes in the insight that accompanies each poem. There is nothing preachy here-just a deep reflective sharing. In "Nature's Ways," the first section, you can feel her love for nature. It is this love of the environment that is one of our key resonances. She shares her life lessons interwoven with the tapestry of nature. Part two is "Love Principles." I am an incurable romantic. My heart soars when someone receives so deeply and gives so profoundly. She is nuanced in her relationships and has a quite profound affinity for cosmic forces. Part three is "The Past." In this section one has a sense of her soul traveling through life, her aspirations, and her relationships. One feels the intensity in which she lives life, the depths of her giving, and her capacity for love. Part four, "Life Principles," is exactly that. One can feel the prisms in which she captures life. Nuanced in and out, this section offers the wisdom of perception and reflection. Old Soul. Grace Eleazar is an old soul, as is evident in her reflections on life and her longings. One senses the maturity of a well-traveled soul that has learned to take life without pettiness or bitterness but goes deep despite whatever pain its lessons offer. The Gift. This is such an appropriate title for a book wherein the author bestows gifts for life itself. On every page and in every line, she gives of herself in the honesty of her sharing. One can live life and then go on, or one can live life and make that life a gift. This is in essence what The Gift is about. It is my honor to be the author's friend.

"What I had thought of before as God, I met today in a human being."

Those were the words of the Persian mystic poet Rumi upon meeting the wild dervish Shams Tabriz. And out of their friendship bloomed many of Jelaluddin Rumi's most inspired verses.

In Just Being Here, the acclaimed poet Coleman Barks joins master cellist David Darling in a celebration of friendship - some of Rumi's most memorable poems on the subject and five of Coleman's own - illuminated within the interplay of Coleman's inspired readings and David's music. Listen in and let them widen and deepen your senses, like a fresh breeze that invites you to breathe freely and surrender to love in all of its changing guises.

PDF Ebook Online Decline of the Animal Kingdom, by Laura Clarke

A debut collection with a fresh approachDecline of the Animal Kingdom investigates modern constructs of domesticity, freedom, wilderness, and artificiality to paint a portrait of what it means to be human, animal, or both in a society saturated with dog boutiques, trophy hunting, retro taxidermy, and eco-tourism. With brief forays into Algonquin Park and the heart of the 1980s jungle, the book largely draws its energy from the urban landscape, where the animals that interact with the environment have permanent effects on the land and human psyche. A wild deer wanders into the downtown core; the Galapagos and the ethics of conservation invade our Xbox; a mule grows weary of his unrewarding office job and unfulfilling relationships. Exploring the victories and defeats of an urban existence complete with 9-to-5 office angst, the claustrophobia of domestic partnerships in bachelor apartments, and party-and-pick-up culture, Decline of the Animal Kingdom is Laura Clarke’s love letter to the city of Toronto, and to extinct animals and office misfits alike.

Decline of the Animal Kingdom, by Laura Clarke

Review “The poems in Clarke’s debut collection appear deceptively simple at first glance, with the pop sheen of YouTube videos and movie reviews, but are in fact nuanced examinations of the relationships between people and animals, domesticity and the wild.” — National Post“Clarke’s mischievous, fabulist debut collection blurs the lines between the literal and allegorical as she employs a lens of anthropomorphism, an edge of misanthropy, and the slow unravelling of personae into disparate states evoking something between grace and madness. The stark, spare language of her poetry, which utilizes a variety of forms, belies its complexity . . . Clarke’s successful balancing of calculated loathing and euphoria makes for a fierce piece of performance art.” — Publishers Weekly, starred“Decline of the Animal Kingdom is Laura Clarke’s debut but it comes with fangs fully bared, claw’s out and a hungry raptors’ dark and fearless heart.” — Today’s Book of Poetry

About the Author Laura Clarke’s work has appeared in a variety of publications including PRISM International, Grain, the National Post, and the Antigonish Review. She is the 2013 winner of the Bronwen Wallace Award for Emerging Writers from the Writers’ Trust of Canada. She lives in Toronto, Ontario.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. playful language and voice won me over at times, just not consistently enough By B. Capossere Poetry collections are usually for me a mixed bag, and so I go into them less hoping for an across-the-board strength (which is rare for me outside the well-known poets) as a few memorable poems, some striking images, and a few lines that linger in the head for some time after reading. Even if that only happens a minority of the time I spend with a collection, I’m more than happy with those few instances. To be honest, it was a close class if Laura Clarke’s Decline of the Animal Kingdom would meet even those not-so-stringent standards. By the time I reached the end of the collection, the playfulness of language and concept had won me over just enough times to make the answer a somewhat tentative yes.In some ways, I enjoyed the overall, holistic sense of the collection—particularly through the prism of its anthropomorphism—more than the individual poems themselves, and the arch absurdist voice more than the particular language, though I did find several poems and lines that stood out amongst the others. And I would say as well that I think more than many collections, Clarke’s does better read aloud, both for its sound quality and for the sharpness of those personas, many of them from the vantage point of the mules that weave in and out of the collection. Reading it silently left me often more than a little detached, while reading aloud gave me a bit more to pin my enjoyment on—the cadence, the sound quality, even just the rush of words and images to carry me along even if I was a bit at sea as to meaning. For instance, here is the end of “Attention! All Ye Beasts of Miraculous Origins”You always were a fatherless beastPulsing with joke chromosomes—Amphibious, more toad than horse,More frog than donkey. The flies knewAnd liked to hover, just out of reachOne can hear those similar “o”s and near rhymes in “joke chromosome” “more toad than horse,” “More frog than donkey,” as well as the “f’ sounds that run throughout “fatherless, amphibious, frog, flies” with the “v” in “hover” sliding just nearby. The sound linkages are ratcheted up even more in “Materials for a Memoir on Animal Location” in lines such as “paper the proper barometer for human behavior” and “Like you the leopard’s lists”I particularly enjoyed the poems that had fun with the monotony of bureaucracy and office work, as in “Half Hours with Natural History: Animals Natural and Domestic”Cross-Departmental Memo, Lion Recreational Department toLeopard Recreational DepartmentWE RAN OUT OF PAPER STOPPLEASE SEND PAPER AND TOILET PAPER STOP . . .PLEASE SEND APPROVAL . . .Employees request condoms be purchased somewhereOther than Dolloarama during next orderMy brother will not be pursuing any legal action in theRecent mauling case . . .This was only of several out loud laughs Clarke provoked, though she is capable as well of provoking moments of thought, as in “In Defence of My Lawsuit Against Lubbock Museum”:Are we rendered more or less ourselves by anArrangement of skin? The difference between hair and fur, between sleeknessAnd drudgery,Between practicality and a dead mule, contained inMultitudes of shavedBone flakes on a hardwood floor.I wished at the end that I had felt provoked more often, and moved more often as well. I appreciated the playfulness, but my personal bent is for a bit more than that. Which isn’t to say there isn’t more here; my not finding it is perhaps more my problem than Clarke’s. This is also why I tend to get my poetry books from the library rather than purchase them. I do buy the ones that strike me strongly enough times, and while Decline of the Animal Kingdom didn’t meet my “would I buy it” after reading it test, I do think it’s worth checking out.
