Silly tongue-twister names like King Kubla Kahn and Maureen o’Meagin o’Shamus o’Sheegan By Coach A In Alphabet-Saurus, Hurwitz shares a collection of original fables intended for readers of all ages. Readers are introduced to an imaginative cast of twenty-six characters with names as outlandish as their stories. Silly tongue-twister names like King Kubla Kahn and Maureen o’Meagin o’Shamus o’Sheegan, reminiscent of Dr. Seuss and Shel Silverstein, catch readers’ attention from the beginning of the poem. The magical fantasy lands inhabited by trolls, gnomes, and pixies further draw young readers into each tale as well as hold the attention of any adult reader. The entertaining, character-driven tales are forward-moving keeping readers engaged and eager to know the fate of the title character. What’s the snap heard when Deadeye Dick – the short, stout older brother of Captain Hook – is caught in a tug-o’-war with a crocodile and fellow pirates? Should Harry Hobgloblin really worry about the Martian invasion reported in the morning newspaper?Because of rhythm, some tales are more enjoyable than others when read aloud. “Sidney Snake was on the make/And said, Just watch me have my cake/And eat it too! All doors swing ope/It’s such a joke” begins one tale. The book would benefit from more color and illustrations to accompany the fables. For instance, I would love to have seen an illustration of the fanciful frog appropriately named Fauntleroy that sports a bowler, cloak, and wig. Each poem is preceded by a page adorned with eccentric pencil drawings encircling the representative letter of the alphabet. An alternate design might use these pages to incorporate images from the poem offering readers a clue about what is to follow.Through humorous tales of varying lengths, Hurwitz accomplishes his goal of creating fun, thoughtful poems lacking unnecessary cruelty and gratuitous pain. As with most collections, readers will discover favorite characters and poems, and disregard others. On the whole, readers young and old will find this collection pleasing. This review first appeared in San Francisco Book Review

By Amazon Customer Alphabet-Saurus, by my friend, Dr. Arnon Hurwitz, has more to do with the Greek word 'thesauros' or 'treasure' than with anything paleontological. It is indeed a treasure of poetry (and music too, if you acquire the accompanying CD), each of the 26 poems included being creatively crafted around an orderly progression through each letter of the English alphabet and each letter serving as the dedicated starting point of its respective poem. Suffice it to say that there are elements of whimsy, irony, intrigue, surprise endings, and pedagogy in these captivating poems, as imaginative characters as well as storybook creatures and characters of literary renown form the primary cast. The CD version of the book has the added delight of music, mostly old Irish fiddle tunes performed by the author and ably accompanied by local guitar-playing pals. These tunes are evenly interspersed throughout the poem recitations, and thus they seem like oases that allow 'a drink of reflection' and invite the listener onward on the next leg of the journey. Recited by the author and his wife, illustrated by their daughter, and supported instrumentally by fellow residents of their 'current hometown' of Tehachapi, CA, this labor-of-love production of poems and tunes is truly a family affair and should provide you and your family the perfect excuse to (on occasion) revisit the alphabet.

Grins and more - stories to stretch the mind By Elizabeth Holtschneider I'm closer to 90 than 9 - at least most of the time....this book is a delight to read and the humor's sublime.Love the sly fables contained in the stories...makes me smile just to remember some of them. On all levels...from little kids to old dears....Hurwitz' writing encourages thinking and best of all reading aloud to anyone who will listen.

Most people outside Italy know Pier Paolo Pasolini for his films, many of which began as literary works—Arabian Nights, The Gospel According to Matthew, The Decameron, and The Canterbury Tales among them. What most people are not aware of is that he was primarily a poet, publishing nineteen books of poems during his lifetime, as well as a visual artist, novelist, playwright, and journalist. Half a dozen of these books have been excerpted and published in English over the years, but even if one were to read all of those, the wide range of poetic styles and subjects that occupied Pasolini during his lifetime would still elude the English-language reader.             For the first time, Anglophones will now be able to discover the many facets of this singular poet. Avoiding the tactics of the slim, idiosyncratic, and aesthetically or politically motivated volumes currently available in English, Stephen Sartarelli has chosen poems from every period of Pasolini’s poetic oeuvre. In doing so, he gives English-language readers a more complete picture of the poet, whose verse ranged from short lyrics to longer poems and extended sequences, and whose themes ran not only to the moral, spiritual, and social spheres but also to the aesthetic and sexual, for which he is most known in the United States today. This volume shows how central poetry was to Pasolini, no matter what else he was doing in his creative life, and how poetry informed all of his work from the visual arts to his political essays to his films. Pier Paolo Pasolini was “a poet of the cinema,” as James Ivory says in the book’s foreword, who “left a trove of words on paper that can live on as the fast-deteriorating images he created on celluloid cannot.”             This generous selection of poems will be welcomed by poetry lovers and film buffs alike and will be an event in American letters.

The Selected Poetry of Pier Paolo Pasolini: A Bilingual Edition, by Pier Paolo Pasolini

Review "This substantial bilingual edition of 76 poems, most drawn from seven major collections published in Italian between 1954 and 1971 and including some that appeared posthumously in 2003, is a welcome step toward redressing the damaging imbalance in the image of Pasolini conventionally offered to readers of English. Sartarelli's intelligent, stylish translations are accompanied by copious and helpful notes, a bibliography and filmography, and a spirited and very useful introduction. Wide-ranging, authoritative, and handsomely produced, Sartarelli's volume establishes itself immediately as by far the best selection of Pasolini's poetry available in English; its publication is a landmark in Pasolini studies. . . . Essential." (CHOICE)"An accused blasphemer deeply devoted to Franciscan Catholicism, a Gramscian communist permanently expelled from the party, an avowed homosexual dedicated to the consensual sexual freedom of everyone, a champion of the local on a global scale, a neorealist of the imagination, and a radically innovative poet alienated from the existing practices of the avant-garde: Pasolini is not so much a figure of contradictions as he is a force against the incoherence hiding in every hypocrisy." (Susan Stewart The Nation)“Pasolini is known as a filmmaker and political rebel, and for his tragic death, yet he was first and most importantly a poet. Sartarelli’s brilliant translations have at last made his searingly beautiful poetry available to English-language readers.” (John Ashbery)“Sartarelli’s impeccable and inspired translations will be of incommensurable value to all students of Pasolini’s oeuvre. This new English edition of Pasolini’s poems is the most comprehensive and the most accurate version available in the Anglo-American world. Although Pasolini saw himself primarily as a poet, outside Italy his vast poetic production has not received the critical attention it certainly deserves. Sartarelli’s generous selection and his sincere dedication will enhance our understanding of one of the major European artists of the twentieth century.” (Armando Maggi, University of Chicago)“The remarkable range of Pasolini’s poetic achievements, which in myriad ways underpin his renowned work in cinema and fiction, is brilliantly represented in Sartarelli’s impressive bilingual edition. His translations convincingly convey Pasolini’s densely woven, allusive poems, their musicality, passion, and lyricism. The touch of Sartarelli’s confident, sensitive hand, of a poet who is also a scholar, has brought a most welcome new edition of one of the most important literary and cultural figures of the twentieth century.” (Patrick Barron, University of Massachusetts Boston)

About the Author Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922–75) was an Italian film director, writer, and intellectual. Stephen Sartarelli has translated widely from French and Italian, most recently works by Andrea Camilleri and Gabriele D’Annunzio.

Great edition of a Great Poet's Work By Timothy B Sullivan A poet not well known in the US, but brilliant, and I greatly prefer the dual-language edition, as I have with other poets - it's the only way to capture some of the intended "sound" that is so integral to poetry.

One poem led to another and suddenly I finished the book, wanting more. I follow Thom Young on Instagram and love his style of writing. Bukowski inspired and raw poetry combined. The one thing I would have wanted was to read more...too short.I highly recommend.-Christina Strigas

The author writes in a very condescending tone and a lot of the 'poetry' seems to be written not with the intent to share truth nor beauty, but rather to have content to publish. While it is okay to to be brash and crass when expressing feelings in poetry a lot of the content was straight up rude for seemingly no reason.I had originally come here from the author's Instagram account where he claimed to be a best-selling, #1 author and I am severely disappointed and feel slightly conned. While he did reach #1 in Germany it's not an impressive feat- it only takes a few sales or downloads in Germany to achieve a #1 rank, especially in poetry. As I write this the current US Amazon sales rank is #2,161,767 and I'm really not surprised. There is little to no quality in this 'book' of 'poetry'. Would not recommend.

Metta-Morphosis, by Christy Sharshel

From the Author The idea for this project came to me while I was on a silent retreat. A teacher was giving a talk and he kept saying the word 'Metamorphosis" over and over again. For whatever reason, this word caught my interest. As I reflected on that, I really began thinking about the drastically changing landscape of my own life as a result of the transformational practices that I had been immersing myself in over some time - practices that had opened my heart and my mind in ways that surprised me on a daily basis.   Less than a week later, my mother died unexpectedly and, in the following months, I would find myself in depths of grief and despair that I could never have imagined. My meditation time became centered on Loving-Kindness practice...Metta...repeating phrases of care to myself and to all sentient beings over and over again...because I simply couldn't bear the silence of my normal routine.    Metta - Lovingkindness Morph - to change or transform Osis - denoting a process or condition   The process of transformation through lovingkindness is what inspired this collection. Transforming pain, transforming grief, transforming fear, transforming anger. The practice holds me, comforts me, and just keeps saving me. And my heart nearly explodes with the gratitude of it all.

About the Author Christy Sharshel lives in Nashville, TN and has been practicing Vipassana/Insight meditation since 2011. She works in the addiction treatment field and has found daily meditation practice to be a remarkable support her own recovery. Christy is currently a volunteer mentor with the Insight Meditation Community of Washington and co-facilitates IMCW's first online Kalyana Mitta (Spiritual Friends) group.  She is a firm believer that every single moment holds a profound teaching for us if our hearts are open and ready to receive it.

Poetry. African American Studies. Women's Studies. In 1787, Sally Hemings joined her brother James as a paid servant to Thomas Jefferson in Paris, France. In 1789, she returned to Monticello pregnant, a slave again, at her own will. OBJECTS OF ATTENTION explores the intimate boundaries between slave and slaveowner, celebrating the rich interior life and intellect of the enslaved woman while examining the contradictory laws and classic philosophies that supported her captivity. Using the writings of Thomas Jefferson as a framework and textual source, the poems offer a counter- narrative and a shade of depth to the controversial relationship. The collection—written as love letters, laws and language exercises—challenges the ownership of facts—puncturing and punctuating the silence of history.

It was especially remarkable the way the author wrote it in Spanish and translated to English that made it much more affectionate and passionate. A book that you can reread with depth and continue to get emotion from within.
