Urged, or How Sex & Death Lift Up My Granny is a book of myths & fairytales, twisted nursery rhymes, monsters & monster mothers & the initiatory stories of grownup life. "Reading Stella Brice's work is like diving into a sea wave and coming up in a dark cave. A cave echoing with voices from the four winds telling stories that are unfamiliar, ragged, horrible, beautiful, and true. And it's somehow also very bright in this space apart. The light hurts and the pain is delicious. The surfaces of things are majestic, but underneath is something pulsing with life. A quiet night becomes erotic, slimy, and hieratic. You're changed somehow. You're a part of some bardic tradition that stumbled into the rusted clockworks of 'all this,' and emerged in a trance. You speak a thousand languages simultaneously, and you now know what they all mean. It's a 'ravenous abundance.'" -Carolyn Adams, author of The Things You've Left Behind

When I open Urged, I enter an alternate universe, one that is both foreign and familiar. She observes everything and everyone meticulously, takes me deeper into her world, and makes me aware that it's my world, too. I just haven't seen it with the same eyes, felt it with the same tentacles, smelled it, heard it, tasted it in this way before. She makes me question, and she leaves the answers hanging in the air. Each time I put down the book, the ground below me has shifted.

Serving as part 1 of her monastery haiku, this is a great introduction to the depth, beauty and stillness that Malintha Perera brings to her work. This book has practical applications for anyone who is willing to pause, reflect and turn the mind within. That is the special part about reading this book: by receiving a glimpse of Malintha's Monastery, you may discover your own.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. lovely compilation By martha This collection is an absolute treasure. One does not normally think of a book of poetry being a work that one feels compelled to binge read from cover to cover before one can put it down - but such was my response to this lovely set of gems. The author must have a sense of melody, for the descriptions are very lyrical and I believe many (not just the ones in the songs chapter) would be especially well-suited to be set to music. The acid test of a good poem is that it makes one want to read it over and over, and not just to one's self, and I believe this writer has succeeded in this regard. These begs to be shared. All in all, pure delight and a definite re-read.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. It's been wonderful tonight to read Bill's poetry By kcjones It's been wonderful tonight to read Bill's poetry. The emotional gamut is full filled from bliss to mourning; anger to joy. You can tell he's had a good life, a fine wife and good wine and dine. Mr. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. made me weep it was so deep. I enjoyed experiencing Bill's life and the door to his way of thinking and relating. A little sassy now and then but always for the cause of love. Bill writes love notes that hit my heart strings and made me weep for the beauty. I'll be reading it over again now and then.

These poems will captivate you and keep you leaning closer and closer until the very end.I would like to give special recognition to one particular artist especially. If nothing else please take time to read Figuring Out It's Love by a very passionate artist, Dottie Darlene Fry, who has clearly felt the rise and fall and adventure of falling in love. That unsure idea that someone could make you feel all these emotions and take your breathe away without even trying. Then suddenly.....well...find out for yourself. ❤️ Feel the magic of falling in love all over again.

I started writing poetry in 2012.I was in major depression because my husband lost his life to a tragic accident. I was lying in bed wallowing in self pity and the idea came to me to get out a pen and paper, and write a poem about the accident.I don't consider myself a great poet. Most of my poetry comes from the heart. A lot of them are from life experiences, growing up in Eastern Kentucky. I was hesitate to write but through encouragement from my friends, I have given it my best shot. I am a Kentucky born and bred Hillbilly. I have an eighth education, but hopefully I have written something everyone can enjoy.

About the Author On March the 6th, 2012 I lost my husband of 44years,to a very tragic accident. I married Terry without ever having met him. A friend gave me his address to where he was stationed in Korea. He asked me to marry him in a letter, and sent me an engagement ring . It wasn't the most intelligent thing to do. We had a rocky marriage, but stayed together through the hard times. We had five children, and now I'm alone with time on my hands. I will try to continue writing more poetry. My book is mostly about my life growing up in Kentucky. I hope anyone who reads it will find it enjoyable.

So far I have laughed, found myself pondering my life as this poetry sure echoes my past to me and have found my eyes swimming in tears. The nursery rhymes revisited made me chuckle out loud. I am thoroughly enjoying this reading experience. I would highly recommend this book. I plan on purchasing the printed book as this is a keeper for my poetry bookshelf. Updates will follow this review as I progress thru this ebook. I highly recommend Life in Kentucky and more. It has me thinking of my youth and I did not start out in Kentucky.

ONIX DescriptionVirgil's great lyrics, rendered by the acclaimed translator of Gilgamesh

The Eclogues of Virgil gave definitive form to the pastoral mode, and these magically beautiful poems, which were influential in so much subsequent literature, perhaps best exemplify what pastoral can do. "Song replying to song replying to song," touchingly comic, poignantly sad, sublimely joyful, the various music that these shepherds make echoes in scenes of repose and harmony, and of hardship and trouble in work and love.

The Eclogues of Virgil includes concise, informative notes and an introduction that describes the fundamental role of this deeply original book in the pastoral tradition.

The Eclogues of Virgil, by Virgil

Review

“Mr. Ferry is a gifted poet and much-admired translator . . . Those to whom the original is a sealed book will enjoy much of its charm through the medium of the author's accomplished translation, while those who, like Shakespeare, have 'small Latin' can experience the additional pleasure of savoring, with Mr. Ferry's help, the musical perfection of Virgil's lines.” ―Bernard Knox, The Washington Times

“Ferry has achieved a high degree of fidelity to what Virgil wrote . . . Simple, luminous clarity.” ―Richard Jenkyns, The New Republic

“Fresh-minted and sparkling . . . Ferry's translation wonderfully preserves the exquisite harmonies of the mode while giving it a vigorous edge of reality.” ―Robert Taylor, The Boston Globe

Language Notes Text: English, Latin (translation)

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Apology for the English Alexandrine By Knot Hole Book Review No reading of the Eclogues is complete without a reading of the Idylls of Theocritus.Having said that, and having (re-)read that, I find myself commenting on the other review, which was excellent (though it was written for a different edition). I disagree that Virgil "slavishly imitated" Theocritus. My impression is that the Eclogues are more of an artful (and extensive) adaptation. The fear of plagiarism and insistence on originality is a modern phenomenon. Ancient literature depended upon the recasting of existing works to suit the poet's purpose and taste. Appropriation provided a cultural continuum that preserved and transmitted the beauty, values, and ideas of one's predecessors. In Virgil's case, poetic license would not have referred to a deviation from form or tradition as it does today; it would have meant knowing the rules and biding by them.If anything was slavishly imitated by Virgil, it would have been the characters created by Theocritus. Daphnis, Thyrsis, Amaryllis, Tityrus, Corydon, Damoetas and Menalcas all make somewhat more than cameo appearances in the Eclogues. They have in fact re-emerged as Virgil's main cast of characters. In some cases they appear as the poet himself! The Idylls as an art form only superficially affected Virgil. Of course he adapted the singing contests to his own settings and themes. The prizes still included cups, heifers, girls, banes and boons. While the Idylls were a collection of poems written at various times and for various purposes, the Eclogues appear to be (and there is ample evidence to support this) composed as a coherent set. They are the equivalent of a modern-day popular music album. Cohesive devices link one poem to another; matching numbers of lines provide internal balance; there is an introduction and a conclusion.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Poetic interpretation By katyred A lovely poetic interpretation of the Eclogues, but remember that it is a poetical interpretation. This is not a literal translation and Ferry takes some liberties with what might be Virgils' intentions to maintain a certain level of poetical language. If one is well acquainted with Virgil's shepherds, Ferry's might seem a little less vivid. I prefer Ferry's translations of Horace as being more dynamic.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. they aim for a sweet spot between professionals and advanced undergrads or grad students By Khares Cambridge "Green and Yellow" series are superb: they aim for a sweet spot between professionals and advanced undergrads or grad students. This Vergil Eclogues is no exception: very, very good on literary aspects; helpful on grammar and syntax. It is always a Goldilocks challenge: too much help, not enough help. This book is right for people with sound foundations in Latin. Arrived well within promised time (less than 10 mailing days); condition was listed as "like new", and it was as if human hands had never touched it. Cheaper than going to publisher. I would use these guys again in a minute. I am not always convinced that Amazon's shipping beats that of publishers, but the speed, convenience and condition of the product I have received the last several times makes Amazon well worthwhile.
