ONIX DescriptionVirgil's great lyrics, rendered by the acclaimed translator of Gilgamesh

The Eclogues of Virgil gave definitive form to the pastoral mode, and these magically beautiful poems, which were influential in so much subsequent literature, perhaps best exemplify what pastoral can do. "Song replying to song replying to song," touchingly comic, poignantly sad, sublimely joyful, the various music that these shepherds make echoes in scenes of repose and harmony, and of hardship and trouble in work and love.

The Eclogues of Virgil includes concise, informative notes and an introduction that describes the fundamental role of this deeply original book in the pastoral tradition.

The Eclogues of Virgil, by Virgil

Review

“Mr. Ferry is a gifted poet and much-admired translator . . . Those to whom the original is a sealed book will enjoy much of its charm through the medium of the author's accomplished translation, while those who, like Shakespeare, have 'small Latin' can experience the additional pleasure of savoring, with Mr. Ferry's help, the musical perfection of Virgil's lines.” ―Bernard Knox, The Washington Times

“Ferry has achieved a high degree of fidelity to what Virgil wrote . . . Simple, luminous clarity.” ―Richard Jenkyns, The New Republic

“Fresh-minted and sparkling . . . Ferry's translation wonderfully preserves the exquisite harmonies of the mode while giving it a vigorous edge of reality.” ―Robert Taylor, The Boston Globe

Language Notes Text: English, Latin (translation)

Apology for the English Alexandrine By Knot Hole Book Review No reading of the Eclogues is complete without a reading of the Idylls of Theocritus.Having said that, and having (re-)read that, I find myself commenting on the other review, which was excellent (though it was written for a different edition). I disagree that Virgil "slavishly imitated" Theocritus. My impression is that the Eclogues are more of an artful (and extensive) adaptation. The fear of plagiarism and insistence on originality is a modern phenomenon. Ancient literature depended upon the recasting of existing works to suit the poet's purpose and taste. Appropriation provided a cultural continuum that preserved and transmitted the beauty, values, and ideas of one's predecessors. In Virgil's case, poetic license would not have referred to a deviation from form or tradition as it does today; it would have meant knowing the rules and biding by them.If anything was slavishly imitated by Virgil, it would have been the characters created by Theocritus. Daphnis, Thyrsis, Amaryllis, Tityrus, Corydon, Damoetas and Menalcas all make somewhat more than cameo appearances in the Eclogues. They have in fact re-emerged as Virgil's main cast of characters. In some cases they appear as the poet himself! The Idylls as an art form only superficially affected Virgil. Of course he adapted the singing contests to his own settings and themes. The prizes still included cups, heifers, girls, banes and boons. While the Idylls were a collection of poems written at various times and for various purposes, the Eclogues appear to be (and there is ample evidence to support this) composed as a coherent set. They are the equivalent of a modern-day popular music album. Cohesive devices link one poem to another; matching numbers of lines provide internal balance; there is an introduction and a conclusion.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Poetic interpretation By katyred A lovely poetic interpretation of the Eclogues, but remember that it is a poetical interpretation. This is not a literal translation and Ferry takes some liberties with what might be Virgils' intentions to maintain a certain level of poetical language. If one is well acquainted with Virgil's shepherds, Ferry's might seem a little less vivid. I prefer Ferry's translations of Horace as being more dynamic.

This Vergil Eclogues is no exception: very, very good on literary aspects; helpful on grammar and syntax. It is always a Goldilocks challenge: too much help, not enough help. This book is right for people with sound foundations in Latin. Arrived well within promised time (less than 10 mailing days); condition was listed as "like new", and it was as if human hands had never touched it. Cheaper than going to publisher. I would use these guys again in a minute. I am not always convinced that Amazon's shipping beats that of publishers, but the speed, convenience and condition of the product I have received the last several times makes Amazon well worthwhile.

Laster Only people who’ve never lived anywhere outside of metropolitan areas will/ cannot relate to Pat Durmon’s poems found in her third poetry volume, Push Mountain Road. But those country folk among us certainly can, since her subjects include ladybugs, barking dogs, the White River, an apple tree, flowers, bats, falling stars, deer stands, skunks, snakes and marital love, among others. How does she deal with conflicts? If you knew Pat, you would know the answer: with love, even a bear at the birdfeeder. Even disposing of bats. Not so much with snakes and a wild hog, however. Her poetry is predominately free verse, is easy to read and understand, but deep enough to catch any double meanings therein. Highly recommended for a delicious taste of life in the Ozarks through poetry.

At times Pat offers you a hand to hold for an even more pleasant walk. Drivingor walking, you experience the unexpected curves and inevitable ups and downs of life. You breath deeply of the Ozarks’ natural beauty along the way: “A Clear Night in theHills”, meet Pat’s loving companions: “He Shoulders the Load” and “HoneybeesDropped By”, and are invited to immerse yourself in day-by-day situations like those Patencountered that lead to extraordinary observations : “Constellations” and “Birth Day,Tomorrow”. Push Mountain Road’s poetic images touch and inspire and enrich.

By Harold M Knowing the author and the area she writes about, I can say that these poems tell a lot of truth about both. There is power in the images and emotions portrayed, painted in words that surprise and sing. They tell a lot about the author and her beloved surroundings, the scenes and the people. If I had not already felt a kinship with Pat, reading her poems would have fostered that. A few have already given me the encouragement to write a few poems of my own. A must read for those who have traveled Push Mountain Road and a compelling invitation to those who have not yet had that pleasure.Rene Mitchell

Some are emotions I carried, and many are about how I would try to depict how others felt. Each poem speaks for itself. Take a moment and view a few samples. I hope you enjoy the aesthetic experience.

My favorite poem by far has to be I"ll Be There. That poem speaks to me on many different levels, but the most basic is how I feel about my husband when he's going through tough times.

Poetry. LGBT Studies. In HOME STUDIES, Julie Gard presents queer midwestern family life from a fresh and engaging perspective. Her prose poetry illuminates the struggles and celebrations of adoptive parenting, love over time, and finding one's place in a community. "From beginning to end, Gard's new collection trades in empathy... a series of fifty-nine linked prose poems, or snapshots, that delineate the every- day... We might go so far as to call this a post-Adrienne Rich collection, less a call to arms than an invitation to climb into the quotidian trenches and live for a while."—Lance Larsen, author of Genius Loci

Broken up into three parts, “Homes Studies” pulls at the heart strings beginning with a subtle commentary on how members of the LBGT community tend to be labeled solely based on their sexual orientation even as the “lesbian poet moms” deal with the unbearable death of their youngest child. Each prose then builds from relatable to unimaginable as the heart-wrenching stories in the middle section describe the house fire that devastated the family through portrayals of items at the neighborhood thrift store. As careful readers uncover the increasingly creepy details of the disturbed neighbor who set the blaze, ranging from the lingerie left on the porch and a declaration that he wanted to be “daddy” to the couple’s adopted daughter to the mental anguish of small town rumors, each revelation brings the horror back anew. The only possible drawback I could say about “Home Studies” is the final section of the book doesn’t have quite the punch that the first two built to. With that being said, these prose still flow with the overall theme of the collection. It is easy to see why “Homes Studies” is the most recent winner of the New Rivers Press’s Many Voices Project with such hauntingly beautiful lines such as “the computers will glow all around us, and you’ll learn that words, if nothing else, make sense.”We can only hope that Gard’s words make sense to readers no matter their orientation or location.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not your "typical" poetry book By Amazon Customer Home Studies by Julie Gard are a collection of poems split into three parts. The first part, dealing with sexual orientation, would be relatable to many people. Gard presents a Midwestern spin in her poems.Maybe I’m naive, but for someone to express their feelings so thoroughly from the Midwest seems unfamiliar. Most of the time, experiences such as, having a neighbor try to burn your house down in part two, would have to be pried out of anybody. The feeling of being lost, not having a purpose, or even being extremely quiet is common threads that many can relate to in some way.I don’t typically read poetry. However, Home Studies are not poetry as most would associate. Every page has its poem. No poem is longer than three very short paragraphs. In a way, it’s like going on a treasure hunt and finding someone’s long lost diary of notes and tidbits they wrote to no one in particular. The poem “You Can Always Do It Again” is probably the most indicative of a middle class mother’s routine. Other poems in Home Studies may not relate to you. They may not even make sense to some. But I bet most of the poems will leave you thinking about something personal in your life similar to the experiences shared by Gard.

Ms. Gard takes a close look at life as a Midwesterner through all three parts of this book of prose poems. Starting out with taking a look at how members of the LGBT community deal with the labels that come with their sexual preference, “Home Studies” travels through devastation, loss, and triumph as it reaches its end. Each poem builds on previous poems as it goes from relatable occurrences to unimaginable happenings as the second section plows forward through the house fire and the coping that came with it. Readers are set to figure out for themselves the odd vibes that come off of the neighbor, as he declares that he wants to be the “daddy” of the child. Readers must then deal with the crippling effects that a small town rumor mill can have on a person. It is very easy to see how New Rivers Press chose “Home Studies” as its most recent winner of the Many Voice’s Project. “Home Studies” will grab hold of the reader from the very first poem, to the very last stanza.

By Amazon Customer On receipt of the "FLASHBACK" book (not the Kindle edition), I opened it to simply read the preface and scan a few pages. I planned to set it aside for my bedtime reading. But, for reasons I now fully understand, I kept reading. As I enjoyed each piece of poetry, I would read the associated commentary, only to discover that the TRUE REWARD came when I would immediately go back and re-read the referenced poem. I repeated this for each poem, as I found I could not stop CRAVING THE DENOUEMENTS! Before I knew it, I had consumed a 4-cup pot of tea and read the entire book. I don't think I can birth appropriate words to accurately describe the experience. It was NOSTALGIC, STIMULATING, and PASSIONATE -- it left me yearning for more, and never wanting it to end. When it was all done, I realized that "FLASHBACK" was so riveting that I had been sitting upright, blindly reaching for tea, and holding my breath the entire time I was reading. In the end, I fell back in my seat, exhaled, and exclaimed, "Oh, My God!"I am so glad I also have the Kindle edition to take with me when I travel. What a brilliant work of art by an exceptionally gifted artist! All I can say to her is, “Thank you, thank you, thank you!!”
