Where You Want To Be: New and Selected Poems, by Kevin Pilkington About the Author Kevin Pilkington is a member of the writing faculty at Sarah Lawrence College. He is the author of six poetry collections: Spare Change (1997) was the La Jolla Poets Press National Book Award winner; Ready to Eat the Sky (River City Press, 2004) was a finalist for an Independent Publishers Books Award; IN THE EYES OF A DOG (NYQ Books, 2009) won the 2011 New York Book Festival Award and THE UNEMPLOYED MAN WHO BECAME A TREE (Black Lawrence Press, 2011) was a Milt Kessler Poetry Book Award finalist. WHERE YOU WANT TO BE: NEW AND SELECTED POEMS (Black Lawrence Press, 2016) is his latest collection. His poetry has appeared in many anthologies including: Birthday Poems: A Celebration, Western Wind, and Contemporary Poetry of New England. Over the years, he has been nominated for four Pushcarts. His poems have appeared in magazines including The Harvard Review, Poetry, Ploughshares, Iowa Review, Boston Review, Yankee, Hayden's Ferry, Columbia and North American Review. He has taught and lectured at numerous colleges and universities, including The New School, Manhattanville College, MIT, University of Michigan, Susquehanna University, Saint Vincent College. His debut novel Summer Shares was published by ArcheBooks Publishing in 2012 and a paperback edition was reissued in summer 2014. He recently completed a second novel and is working on a new collection of poems.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. ‘The factory to the left must be manufacturing Viagra to keep its smoke stack erect for so long without going limp’ By Grady Harp Kevin Pilkington creates (or shares) a world that surrounds him, a world he molds into poems that, while seemingly straight forward and simple, force us to look at people and places and ideas in a manner that makes the reader momentarily paralyzed at the end of each poem, not wanting to move on lest the extraordinary mood created might not be accessible should we leave it. In his collection, THE UNEMPLOYED MAN WHO BECAME A TREE, Pilkington suggests that he is so very much a part of New York City that he is growing out of the walls and sidewalks and benches, unable to transform his state of loneliness and isolation into a life of meaning and worth without the aid of a little magic - magic which he happens to find in the most ordinary places. He turns phrases in the most surprising ways, mid sentence, in unexpected turns in his message, in ways that keep the reader immersed in his odd spaces he creates. And it didn’t surprise that reading his prose as in SUMMER SHARES produces the same emotional impact. He is a writer who not only deserves our attention, but a wordsmith who is definitely a voice of importance in American literature.And now we encounter another rare collection of his poems in WHERE YOU WANT TO BE – and that where seems to be wherever we cast our eyes and fully see and absorb the moment. Like Greatest Hits Records By Jason Irwin Like Greatest Hits Records, I usually find selected or collected works of poetry too daunting, preferring small volumes. but Kevin Pilkington's "Where You Want to Be" is different. Having read all his previous volumes I already know that I'll be reading a poet who writes from the gut and the heart. Whether it's poems about his father like "Magis," or "My Father's Hands," or poems about a bar on 2nd Avenue, a love poem, or Mel Torme's voice, each one is alive, turning ordinary ever day experiences into something magical. Take for example "The Unemployed Man Who Became a Tree," "The Way to Heaven," "Where You Want to Be," Apple Spider," "Healthcare," or "Therapy," take any number of poems for that matter, in this fantastic collection and you are in for a delightful surprise. One moment you will laugh out loud, turn the page and feel your heart breaking. Pilkington is an urban poet with the heart and sparsity of the Midwest. All these poems are love stories in one way or another, as he writes in a poem from In The Eyes of a Dog:You got down on your knees and lickedall the words you would never use ontoher legs, a type of love story only youwould ever want to read again.But these are stories you will want to read again and again, stories you may find a piece of yourself in. Little islands of magic that float to the surface and shine. In truth Pilkington is a seeker, sifting through the dark, unexpected places for that sens of meaning we're all looking for, that will make sense of and give our lives meaning.
