The Light Within is the second book that Michael Fitzgibbons has written. His first book, a novel titled My Senior Year, is a gripping coming of age story about Sully, an adolescent boy trying to find his way in a mixed up world. This time around, Fitzgibbons unleashes a different side of his literary voice. The Light Within is an enticing collection of narrative poetry. The consummate storyteller, Fitzgibbons has a unique poetic voice that allows readers immediate access into the hearts of his characters. Further, his poems place readers in the midst of “fork-in-the-road moments” that challenge them to find their own way. His belief in people, the power of relationships, and the importance of story all shine through from cover to cover of this poetry collection. Readers will walk away from The Light Within feeling challenged, but ultimately enlightened. Challenged to identify their own stories within the stories of those whom they encounter on the pages of this collection. And enlightened when they find them.

The writer has surely matured into his best and most imaginative offering to date. The book of poems is set up in three sections centered on individual people, everyday events, and human interactions. It has seemed that he has been circling this book for years with the “I’ll get around to it” attitude many of treat cleaning the attic, or in my case, taking down the rest of the Christmas decorations. It’s been kind of a shock to me in this bite sized, attention span shrinking, I’ll get to it when I am done with this tweet, world that poetry hasn’t caught on. I saw an add the other day who’s theme went something like “who wants to read poetry anyway.” Well I do and I am sure a lot of other people do without even knowing it until they digest the medium. This review could turn into an indictment on the education system in America, but I digress. One poem from Fitzgibbons takes about 2-3 minutes to read. A bathroom break after a chili dinner can knock at least 2 or 3 of these selections out. It’s a free verse style that is easy to read with long declarative sentences coupled with short lines giving an impression of speed and even in some cases a back and forth of thought or ideas. The only poet’s lyrical style I can compare it to is Charles Bukowski, but Fitzgibbons very much has found his own voice here.Michael Fitzgibbons has been an educator since Clinton was not inhaling (40 years), and there is so much here he has to offer. Some is from his own personal experience and some springs from his 15 years of counseling. This is not your cheerful jaunt into the sometimes hilarious musings we are used to from this author. These are a collection of poems set up as small stories of everyday people going through extraordinary circumstance and or horrific events. Some are fighting causes without any real fanfare. Those causes his protagonists face are so lost that they remind us of Jimmy Stewart in “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” hold the Washington. A sort of peoples history that should hit home for a lot of its readers.Take the poem “Priest” for instance, which is a story of a pastor trying to save a dying church. Or “Old Nun” a story about holding on to old rituals and the past that is haunting. It’s not all dark as the title of the book suggests there are slivers of light and sometimes altogether breakthroughs. As the priest realizes to his God at the end of his story “Just keep showing me the dandelions and I promise I will never miss the flowers again.”The book then shifts to another form of storytelling focusing on events in people lives. With poems like “Flat Tire” about a father pulling over to help a young black man receiving racial threats. The poem contains, what this reviewer knows from experience, a heroic act that is shrugged off by its protagonist as commonplace with the lament, “They needed help.” We can imagine that this is an event of the writer’s upbringing on the Southside of Chicago. Also it reaffirms one of the themes of this book, ordinary people dealing with extraordinary situations. Sometimes they act heroically, sometimes they digress into whatever madness or problems they are dealing with. The human interaction section shifts smoothly, as a human interaction is just an event anyway. There are startling images in this section. One of an old one legged veteran saluting a current soldier on a train in “Salute.” In “Flicker” he depicts a young girl dealing with her mother’s death through her life. One of my favorites being, “Kick” about a teen girl who finds incredible strength making a decision to keep her child, “Promising herself whatever came next, they would do together.”At the end of the book, there is a Q and A with the author which he suggest that he wrote these poems out of respect for the people who went through these challenges. In many cases it shines right through in his writing, no pun intended. Again there is so much here that a review can’t give it justice. Including some humor that is more “aha” than “hahaha.” The themes cut close for those who have grown up near Fitzgibbons but are wide enough to connect with a large audience. Hopefully when some of read this you will “never miss the flowers again.”

It said:Music is life.Poetry is art.Television is furniture. In this collection, Mike Fitzgibbons proves the middle proposition. His poetry is art. He paints pictures with words, but they are moving pictures, not static ones. His pictures are invariably portraits, not still lifes. There's not a bowl of fruit or a tropical landscape among them. What is among them is a collection of portraits drawn with words, portraits of real people from every walk of life. I found myself having to read only one or two poems a day, to let them marinate a little. Every once in a while, I found a phrase which caught my attention, although I couldn't always tell why it did. Some of them made me chuckle and smile, some of them made me a bit sad. All in all, I found this a thought-provoking and emotionally deep collection, and I'm glad that I picked it up. In the poem "Teacher", I spotted this line, which I thought was very appropriate for the entire collection:"Poetry is image driven. Image. Image. Image."Yes, indeed...and the images in this book are very well drawn.(Some of the lines I highlighted in my copy)p6 - 2 CentsDear Santa I'm gonna prove you don't existBut just in case, I want the new table top hockey gamep14 - Cart Boy"And saved his life.""Really? He's just a cart boy."p18 - Hospice LadyAnd I knew you were waiting for them to goSo they wouldn't be here when you made your final move.p51 - Grand CanyonMake her proudwork to be donelove the wifelove the kidswalk the road[...] some wounds don't heal with time.p92 - Two Minus OneYou were drinking ZinfandelI had a Miller Lite

I highly recommend this truly worthy volume of Michaels poetry By Sonny Freeman Not sure where Michael Fitzgibbons has been since "My Senior Year" or why it's taken so long for him to publish and share the gift and art of his poetry, but I now look forward to his future offerings. I have shared "The Light Within" with three professional colleagues who are also writers and poets, two of which are university professors, and we all agree on the impact of Fitzgibbons work. Honest, believable, and at times raw as we travel the imagery of the way life is lived, through everyday events and walk our journey with countless others lives. Michaels words have touched our hearts. Let us all share our light within. An outstanding read and life experience. I highly recommend this truly worthy volume of Michaels poetry.Sonny FreemanHudson, IL

I've been following her work on her @JadePoetry Instagram account for a year now and she never fails to amaze me! Her words are crafty, insightful, and so down to Earth. Some days I'll read a dark poem that grasps my heart and forces me to reflect on my life, and other days I'm laughing from her absolute wit and humor. She truly is worth the buy, I cannot wait to see what her future career as an author beholds for her. Very honored to purchase this work of literature.

By Frank A Jurado I have been following this poet online for a while now and I am always impressed with the depth of her writing. Given her age, she has an astonishing grasps well beyond her years. The poetry comes from a place of knowledge and understanding. In a time when so many are looking the other way when it comes to the hardships of life and the struggles of those with deeper rooted troubles, this author attacks the subject head on and provides a voice for those afraid to speak out.

She rejects the compromise offered by Lopakhin, a local businessman, to cut down the orchard and sell the land for holiday homes. Eventually Ranevskaya and her family are forced to leave the estate which Lopakhin has now bought.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. A heartbreak and a smile By William Krischke As I read this play, my family is in the process of moving a thousand miles away from the farm where I grew up. Though I am so far away from the Russian culture and time of this play, the themes of place, tradition, and inevitable change resonated inside of me, and I am grateful to Chekhov for the way he has handled them. The Cherry Orchard is a play about change, and the symbolism is pretty easy to recognize. What makes it stand apart, I think, from a thousand other plays on the same theme is its wonderful sense of comedy, of smiling sadness. Chekhov all his life insisted it was a comedy. As the Cherry Orchard slips away from the Ranevskys, they seem to smile at its going. As they are unable to change their habits -- still lending money they don't have, still spending extravagantly -- they quietly laugh at their own foolishness. The change comes, and they leave, heartbroken -- but embracing the change at the same time, only feebling struggling against it. One feels saddest, in the end, for Lopakhin, the new owner of the Cherry Orchard. He seems to believe he has bought happiness and friends, but is quickly discovering the emptiness of money and possessions, as no one wants to borrow from him, and no one seems to pay him much heed at all.Chekhov paints with a fine brush, and I appreciate that. There is no thunderstorming, no ranting and raving in this work. There is a fine and subtle, sad and comedic portrayal of a family and a place encountering change. It is a heartbreak with a smile. The translation, though the only one I've read, seems good. It is easy to follow and rich in simple feeling.if you'd like to discuss this play with me, or recommend something i might enjoy, or just chat, e-mail me at williekrischke@hotmail.com.

13 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Timeless By Barry D. Smith The Cherry Orchard was me first experience with Chekhov, and I was surprised at the depth in this 49 page play. By no means would I considered myself a "literary expert," but this was very readable and you can pull a lot of the deeper meanings and its context in Russian history by yourself. I was confused at a couple people who write that the simply couldn't understand it and it put them to sleep! It's not THAT tough! If I could understand and appreciate it, almost anyone can! What I like most about Chekhov is that he doesn't simplify his characters. He's a realist in this sense. Lopahkin and Trophimof each have admirable and detestable characteristics, just like you and I. While it may be set in the tumultuous period prior to the Russian revolution, the ideas and the discussions this play provokes are timeless.Highly recommended!

However, this adaptation by David Mamet makes the play easier to follow and understand. The play itself is often labeled as a tragedy, but really isn't. As Mamet points out in the introduction to this adaptation, the closest form of drama THE CHERRY ORCHARD's structure resembles is the farce. In fact, if all the characters weren't so depressing, the play would be hilarious. Perhaps that is what Chekhov originally intended, that as we would see the outrageous, pitiful existence of the characters in this play we would laugh at their mopping and folly and strive to make our lives more meaningful. This isn't the best work to introduce one to the genius of Chekhov, but it is a classic and if one can get past all the whining (or to use a more pc term "reminiscing") it's worth the read.

About the Author Tanisha (Myself) grew up in Oakland California. Reading a book, whatever the topic, stimulates the mind. That's my motive. I grew up not being able to watch T.V. a lot so books became my reason to look forward to the day. I loved reading  a good story in which I could read and visualize the scene as if I was actually there. At a very young age I was reading college level books and actually enjoying them. I remember being around 9 years old reading Maya Angelou's "Why a Caged Bird Sings" the story touched my heart so much I cried and made myself a promise I would write my own stories one day and hope to have the same impact on my readers as she had done for me. That's my goal, whether your laughing, crying, or just simply amazed its a must I spread a positive message one book at a time to all races. I am ready to break the trend that has everyone believe "urban" means "African American." The definition of urban states "of or relating to the cities or people who live in them" which means mostly all of us have been urban at some point!
