"Elias' Proverbs" is a collection of poetic proverbs that are philosophical, spiritual, and, above all, inspirational. Elias the Teacher began to teach in the ancient city of Antioch, speaking words filled with power and wisdom. Among his teachings were poetic practical proverbs to aid God's Children in their daily lives concerning: money and work, love and marriage, parenting and faith. If you enjoy the Bible's "Book of Proverbs" or Kahlil Gibran's "The Prophet", then you will appreciate "Elias' Proverbs".                                           Elias was introduced to readers in Molyneux's first book, "The Angel of Antioch", a tale of faith, persecution and courage. When Elias suddenly appeared, some believed he was an angel, others a prophet; but the religious leaders rejected his words, regarding him as a dangerous fool.   One can easy enjoy "Elias' Proverbs" by itself, without first reading "The Angel of Antioch" "Angel" tells the story of Elias' prophetic ministry in the ancient city of Antioch; whereas "Elias' Proverbs" is a collection of Elias' poetical proverbs given to his followers to aid them in their daily lives.

Elias' Proverbs, by Daniel Molyneux

Review Praise for "The Angel of Antioch" ELIZABETH GOODINE Ph.D. Instructor of Religious Studies, Loyola University "I was deeply moved by the story and appreciate it both for the way it illuminates this period of history and for the message it offers today. In Elias, Molyneux has created a character who calls me to examine myself and invites me to follow on the path of justice for all - which points toward Christ."DR. JOEL BIERMANN, Assoc. Professor of Systematic Theology, Concordia Seminary "Angel of Antioch takes its place among a body of Christian writing that capitalizes on the many possibilities that spring from the premise of a prophetic visitation in an unexpected place.  Molyneux...create(s) a character that is profoundly wise, mysterious, and sacrificial, yet not the Christ...Indeed one of the strengths of the book is that it opens wide a door for reflection and discussion not only about the book's plot and character, but about its historical setting and its spiritual truths."KIRKUS REVIEW "A parablelike tale of spirituality, religion, and persecution. Molyneux's debut reads like Scripture, as it tells a story of a mysterious, increasingly popular spiritual instructor. Set in the ancient city of Antioch, some two centuries before the life of Jesus Christ, the tale centers around Elias, an unassuming teacher who awes his ever-growing audiences with his eloquent wisdom. As his following grows into something akin to a band of disciples, the emperor and religious leaders become alarmed at what they perceive as a challenge to their authority."

From the Author "Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you; love her, and she will keep you. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom." PROVERBS 4:5-7

About the Author Daniel Molyneux was raised in the wide open spaces and Rocky Mountain grandeur of Wyoming, but now calls the San Francisco Bay Area home. Daniel's writing explores the mysteries of life and death, sickness and healing, victory and defeat, faith and supernatural miracle. He holds degrees in drama, economics and theology, including a doctorate from Fuller Seminary in Pasadena, California. He also studied Shakespeare at London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art; and worked extensively with believers persecuted by repressive governments. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This book teaches wisdom By Israel Drazin This is a well-written, easy to read, book of wise poetic proverbs. Yutan is sharing the knowledge that he heard in Syria from Elias. The book contains proverbs for daily life, wealth, love and marriage, sexual intimacy, and parenting. Although different than Herman Hesse’s famed Siddhartha, Molyneux’s book of proverbs reminded me of this classic. Molyneux stresses that people should seek wisdom and not rely on clerics, no matter how pious they seem, for they frequently do not teach true wisdom. He explains that clerics cannot help us attain eternal glory because “Many clerics stand in front of the Door of Wisdom, blocking the way for those who wish to enter.” “A rat is not made sweet and tasty by living in a honey jar. Nor can an evil person become sweet and pleasing to the Almighty by spending long hours within the house of prayer.” “Do not trust a religious person more than others.”Religion can be helpful, but it and its adherents can be dangerous. Many clerics preach an easy to obtain life’s goal, but true religious teachers “boldly speak lessons that are hard and difficult to accept.”Only God “can give eternal glory.” To gain this glory, we need to learn “to abstain from the world’s fleeting pleasures.” But unfortunately people are “content to be dumb.” They do not realize or even care to realize that “wealth cannot buy happiness” and what is important in life is wisdom. The book offers good advice: “Spiritual maturity is reached when a man or woman gives more to others than they receive.” “It is better to be a loving and merciful heathen than a heartless religious judge.” “When dealing with another’s wrongs, be gentle and full of love…. The judgment pronounced on you (for your misdeeds) shall be set by the same measuring stick you used to judge others.” “An objects price is obvious to all. But its long-term cost is a secret whispered only into the ears of the wise.”Other examples: Marriage: “There is no place for modesty in marriage.” “Insults injure more than whips.” Parenting: “Good parents work themselves out of a job.” Friendship: “Don’t lend family and friends, give money as a gift.”In short, this is a book filled with good advice which, when followed, can lead to wisdom and a happy and satisfying life.

Manhold ELIA’S Proverbs, ISBN: 9780691351208, Moriah Books, an e-book by Daniel R. Molyneux. The volume begins with a thoughtful Introduction containing the following closing sentence: “It is my heartfelt prayer that the poetic proverbs contained in this book will enrich your life in some small way, becoming yet another verse in your own personal spiritual song.” This is followed by a few words from Yutan, his constant companion during “his ministry in Syria”. The proverbs begin with those of a Spiritual nature, followed in Part II by many for all aspects of life: Proverbs for Daily Life; for Wealth and Riches; Love and Marriage; Sexual Intimacy; Parenting and then closes with The Benediction.Discussion: This little book possibly requires a dichotomous approach for readers with different agendas - that of the poetry devotee and that of the individual more specifically interested in the content of the proverbs. For the former group, this reviewer may be greatly inadequate. As recently confessed, although I infrequently visit Free Verse and other ‘modern poetry’ forms, I find some difficulty because most of my early exposure was to Elizabethan and 17th century Poets and study under a prominent student of Kittredge, the one-time ‘authority on all things Shakespearian’. Content evaluation is another matter and I should like to offer the comment that these are quite instructive and enjoyable. A suggestion is offered “in the Seasons’, for example: “When dark days of winter descend, the light of spring will soon follow. In the same way when life becomes dark and troubled be patient, preserver. There is a season for all things.” Another in True Religion: “It is better to be a loving and merciful heathen than a heartless religious judge.” And still one more ‘gem’: “Know yourself: If you learn all of the mysteries of the cosmos, but fail to know yourself, you remain an educated fool.”Summary: A charmingly instructive little book, all readers should find something worthwhile reading.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. ‘When dealing with another’s wrongs, be gentle and full of love.’ By Grady Harp California author Daniel Molyneux has earned degrees in drama (he also studied Shakespeare at London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art), economics and theology doctorate from Fuller Seminary in Pasadena, California. THE ANGEL OF ANTIOCH was his debut novel; his second book ELIAS' PROVERBS is now available and serves as a mighty adjunct to the first book. Daniel's writing explores the mysteries of life and death, good and evil, sickness and healing, victory and defeat, faith and unbelief, science and supernatural miracle. In this book Daniel shares a collection of proverbs and presents them in an inordinately sensitive manner.Daniel opens this collection by states, ‘Wisdom has diligently been sought throughout human history. From Confucius' words to the philosophers of Ancient Greece, from Siddhartha's quest for enlightenment to the revelations contained in Hebrew and Christian scriptures, the quest for wisdom has been universal. One of the magical aspects of wisdom is its inseparable link to poetry, lyric, song, proverb and parable. If all poetry, proverbs and parables were removed from the Bible, the remaining words would be an impoverished shell, largely stripped of their beauty and emotional power. It is my heartfelt prayer that the poetic proverbs contained in this book will enrich your life in some small way, becoming yet another verse in your own personal spiritual song.’What follows are the proverbs of Elias the Teacher whom we know well from THE ANGEL OF ANTIOCH. A few can be shared here.‘Bearers of Light - Angels dwell in glimmering Illumination, carrying Light with them wherever they go. Bright bliss surrounds the Elysian Host, no matter where they may roam. When the Light Bearers are sent to visit dark dungeons in Gehenna, glowing Illumination still shines within them, even while surrounded by Hades’ Abyss. The Flame - Friends, to be near me is to be near a flame. The fire brings light and warmth to you; but my words blaze and burn those who revere the dark, throwing them into a rage. Soon they will try to put my fire out. Finding God - In the search for their Creator, when at last the Author is found, a divine revelation is revealed - it was the Mighty One who was seeking; and the Almighty who did the finding. Human beings do not discover God; it is the Lord who seeks and saves the lost.’ While clearly within the realm of `religious writing' this book is much more - it is an examination of what a man of insight and wisdom faces as he courageously questions ancient ideas and concepts. Daniel has not only researched his period well, he has carefully concentrated on the psychology of religious thought and brings a fresh life into sacred teachings. Few who read this book will fail to find deeply moving concepts for contemplation on the role of institutional religion versus open spiritual thought. Grady Harp, October 15

That rare instance where poetry is actually fun to read By Pierre Comtois Slim enough to fit in your pocket so that you can have it with you at all times (useful for warding off pesky shoggoths or soothing the fevered brows of wandering Tcho Tcho People) and yet chock full of poetical gems that run the gamut from the serious to the whimsical. The handful of pieces done as homages to such literary and artistic greats as H.P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, Ray Bradbury and Gervasio Gallardo are especially touching. And the cover image by Allen Koszowski doesn't hurt either! Sure, the price is a bit steep, but it is a hardcover after all and you get all of Henry Vester's poetical output in a single place instead of scattered over a dozen small press magazines released over decades. That rare instance where poetry is actually fun to read. In fact, these pieces are actually better if read aloud. Try them and see!

Beeby Pearson began writing poetry in her mid-60s. As a Yoga teacher and meditation practitioner, she also approached poetry as a daily practice. Working on her own, in workshop settings and with poetry groups, she became adept in the translation of her observations and emotions. In 2010 Prime Time Cape Cod and the Academy of Lifelong Learning awarded her 1st Place for her poem, entitled "Living Will." Unhooking was originally intended as a gift for family and friends on the occasion of the award-winning author's 75th birthday. Publication was delayed, however, by a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. The self-published version was delivered into the writer's hands 6 months later, only hours before she died. The decision to offer these intimate poems to a wider audience was not difficult. Themes of loss, grief, and recovery extend to all in the human family. Anyone who has struggled to come to terms with the death of a child, to free themselves from religious dogma, or simply to find meaning in the midst of everyday life will find resonance in these articulate and profound poems.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Beautiful, Poignant Book of Poetry By Helen Lautenbach I loved these poems. They are beautiful odes to the meaning of life that everyone experiences. Some make you remember, some make you cry, some make you laugh and some make you see life in a more beautiful, colorful way. These poems continue to live with you as you experience your own living. The poem "Dress Code" enables you look at words and labels on clothes differently for the rest of your life. The poem "Painted Wordless" allows you see colors in your world like never before. And the poem "Unhooked" compels you look at your own life to see where you have unhooked from your own childhood's beliefs and traditions. These are only a few of the many poems in this book that you will want to read again and again because of the beauty of each chosen word and the depth of meaning contained in each phrase..

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An Artful Collection By Sharon McAuley I first heard a sampling of these poems read aloud during an oil painting workshop. Almost mystically, they drew me into a center where my own griefs and loves were being spoken. Paradoxically, the poet seems to be writing from the extreme edge of a life that is almost over, yet at the same time from the heart of a vital life that is being mined for all of its riches. The poems are beautiful, heart wrenching, honestly unorthodox, and profoundly faith filled. Each poem, though simple in structure, invites contemplation. This artful collection is one of a kind, and is to be treasured.

Silence in the Rain was written from my thoughts, feelings, heart, and mind. These words came from my innermost being and are written to inform the reader on life, love, friendship as well as joys, sorrows, hurt, pain and my depressive state. "Silence in the Rain" shows how I kept my silence when I was going through the rain of personal relationships – I kept silent. As the rain was falling down on me: falling from my mind; falling from my eyes; I kept silent I didn't talk to anyone about my innermost thoughts and feelings. I didn't express them openly. I kept them to myself and then began to write them down in my daily journal. Whether I was happy, sad, hurt, depressed, angered, or upset I wrote about it. It didn't matter if I just wanted to stand on the mountaintop or even drift into mid-air, I wrote it down. I guess one would say that I did indeed tell something – or shall I say someone – Myself – my Journal. These poems will not only inspire you, giving you good words of knowledge, but will inform you as well on different emotions that occur along life's journey.

Silence in the Rain, by Chondrika Lucille Williams

From the Author Silence in the Rain is a title that some will not understand. I have been through personal things as well as seen many events growing up in Louisiana. My experiences since I was a little girl all through my teenage years I've gone through sexual abuse as well as mental. It left me at a state to where I believed I was "stuck" in my teenage years as everything was falling down on me. I never said a word. I kept everything boggled down inside. As an adult it seems I was still in that same "state" with choices and decisions I made due to what I'd known, been through, seen, felt, and thought was right. Still I remained silent until I decided to write what was happening to me day by day at the most. I've gone as far as being diagnosed with depression and schizophrenia with prescribed medication. It seems everything was falling down, showering down on me like rain. It may be my past but I chose to write about it whether I was depressed, sad, happy, angered, or upset. I look back over what I've written and I can say that sometimes I say "Wow did I actually do this or "Is this really me?" Well truth is I've learned and grown from my own personal experiences and there will be more to come!

From the Inside Flap I'm so tired ofcrying at nightI don't know whatto say or doI'm starting toget nervous all over againI feel so aloneand can't stop cryingI'm so tired ofthis painIt feels like I'mall by myself for a second time aroundWell, all I cansay isIf it happensagainAt least I knowhow to raise a familyIt seems like it'smeant for me to be aloneIt's like there'snot a real man for meThat cares enoughabout my heart, body, soul, and mindI've had pain andtears throughout the years that have not vanishedMy pillows arestill carrying those wet spots that dripped from my eyesFLEEING THE CITY Sometimes I justfeel like fleeing the citySometimes I justfeel like dropping everything and runningSometimes I justfeel that I can get awaySometimes I wantto be on the mountaintop with my arms stretched wideHead lifted to theskyEyes closedWith the biggest grimaceon my faceTwirling around tothe music playing in my headBeing worry freeCare freeOff to myself

Written over an eight-year period, the poems in State of Grace: The Joshua Elegies chronicle the death of Alexis Rhone Fancher’s only child, Joshua Dorian Rhone, at the age of 26, and its aftermath of devastation, grief, and reflection. Because she was a divorced parent since her son was three, the bond between mother and child was particularly strong, making Joshua’s early death especially wrenching.

But Fancher, an award-winning poet known for her frank, image-filled poetry, has created a work of hope, joy, and lasting beauty—which poet Jack Grapes calls “a magnificent testament to the resilience of the human spirit”—where she indeed finds solace and a “state of grace.”

Poet Cynthia Atkins calls Fancher’s collection of elegies “the ultimate tribute to her beloved son.”

“Fancher’s heart is large, refuses to shut down to sorrow and loss, but instead, allows her brave and resilient voice to shine the light, to move us all forward into a state of grace.”

Two of the poems in the chapbook have been nominated for the 2015 Best of the Net Anthology: “The Competition” (KYSO Flash) and “when her son is dead seven years” (Blotterature).

Since 2013, Fancher’s work has been nominated for four Pushcart Prizes and four Best of the Net awards.

She is also the author of How I Lost My Virginity to Michael Cohen: and other heart-stab poems (Sybaritic Press, 2014). Her poems have been published in numerous literary journals and magazines, as well as in 25 American and international anthologies, and her photographs have been published worldwide.

Fancher is photography editor of Fine Linen, and poetry editor of Cultural Weekly, where she also publishes The Poet’s Eye, a monthly photo essay about her ongoing love affair with Los Angeles. She lives in downtown L.A. with her husband and co-creator James Fancher in their eighth-floor loft/studio.

State of Grace: The Joshua Elegies, by Alexis Rhone Fancher

Review A magnificent testament to the resilience of the human spirit. -Jack Grapes, author of The Naked Eye and All the Sad AngelsThese poems reach out and pull the reader into an embrace of not only understanding and sympathy, but of knowledge in how, and in some cases how not, to offer comfort in such a heartrending circumstance. It would be remiss though, to overlook Fancher's adept abilities with the mechanics of poetry. This collection shines with the brilliance of craft. -Ellaraine Lockie, award-winning poet, nonfiction author, and educatorThe elegy is poetry's highest and noblest calling, for it both articulates the heart's anguish while also illuminating the immutable and infrangible bond of love. Such art is made at no small cost: the bereaved poet endures to bear witness. -Richard Jones, author of The Correct Spelling & Exact Meaning The ache of the heart is fierce with loss, and Alexis Rhone Fancher reminds us that the indelible bond a mother has for her child is boundless: "no place is big enough to hold it." -Cynthia Atkins, author of In the Event of Full Disclosure

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. to the remorseless human condition that teaches us to love even to the moment of and beyond death By Diane Dehler Today, I read “STATE OF GRACE: THE JOSHUA ELEGIES, by Alexis Rhone Fancher. This collection of poems was written in memoriam to her late son. The purity and sorrow of these poems took my breath away for they are chiseled from frozen tears. In these poems the loss of her beloved, Joshua becomes our collective loss. For me personally they awakened grief for the death of an infant son long ago. The torrent of sorrow that follows in the wake of these poems belongs to us all; to the remorseless human condition that teaches us to love even to the moment of and beyond death.I can’t imagine what it was like for Alexis Fancher to read these poems at public readings as she has and revisit the hour of her loss over and over. Like Jacob she has “wrestled all night” with an angel and emerged victorious, for in her capacity to own her experience she transcends it. I hear echoes of Sylvia Plath in these poems but most distinctly, the elegance and grace of Alexis Rhone Fancher’s voice. I can’t recommend this book highly enough.

Alexis is a brilliant Poet, weaving together language can leave lasting pain striped around your shoulders like a frigid hug. Her poetry from The Joshua Elegies, is that poignant, and painful. I read it in one sitting, not able to part with my emotion for this amazing and lively woman. Her stories are human, and she is always elegant. You must read this. You will reconnect with all your humanity, and enjoy the moments of life shared with your loves. Also, if you have experienced deep loss, Alexis will be the steady fist waving in the air, pledging justice and life for all who've suffered.I love her writing. She is an inspiration -- displaying her pain -- with great truth.

A true gift By MaryM Brave and exquisitely crafted poems documenting a mother's journey through the grief of losing a beloved child--a young man just at the beginning of a life that is cut brutally short. This is the voice of one mother's grief, but also of every mother's grief--intensely personal and particular it transcends the personal and embraces all who mourn and are not comforted. Fierce poems that address death and refuse to be defeated by it. A treasure for every reader of poetry, every mother, every one who has suffered loss, everyone who will face their own end, full of courage, and full of grace.
